Alexandra's Practically Pawfect Training and behaviour support and transformation on a 1:1 basis. Qualified Scentwork UK Trainer and Judge for Tier 1. Based in Bexley, Kent I’m Alexandra.

From a tiny child, I was always fascinated by animals and their behaviour. I grew up surrounded by animals of all different species including dogs, cats, bunnies and many more. I always knew I was destined to be involved with animals and their families. I’ve been involved in dog training since I was a young teenager and have lived in a multi-dog household since then. Each of my dogs have taught me

so much and shaped who I am, what I know about dogs and how I choose to train and interact with animals and their families. I have spent vast amounts of time learning through a variety of courses, books and hands on experience and am committed to always learning more. I spend most of my days training, walking and looking after animals (mainly dogs but also other animals) and love every minute of it. In terms of dog training, I offer reward-based training on a one to one basis and love seeing the relationship build between dogs and their owners. There's so much information around about dogs and dog behaviour out there, it can be difficult to know how and where to start. One of my aims as a dog trainer is to help people to find the information and answers they are looking for. Also, to help them move towards the life they planned to have when they chose to add a dog to their family

I know that everyone and their pets’ needs will be different. That is why everything I offer is bespoke and designed to suit what is needed. Bespoke in person training options
Online training options
Solo or small group dog walks
In house visits or pet sitting

Heatstroke is lethal and with the hot weather we've been having it's a realr risk. While prevention is better than cure, it's important to know the signs.

Here are the signs to look out for:

- Excessive panting
- Bright red or pale gums
- Dribbling or foaming
- Lethargy and collapse
- Vomiting

If you suspect that your dog has a heatstroke, get them wet and take them to a vet straight away.

1 year ago today, you (Ted) went in for an operation to save your life.

We had no way to know if it would work and the odds kept stacking up against you. But knowing your spirit and honest, trusted opinions of our vet, we had to give you the chance.

And what a fighter you've been.

We're so lucky to have had another year with you. Full of mischief, adventures, long walks, and eating us out of house and home ♥️

With the predicted heat, your 'one year on celebrations' solo adventure day has to be postponed slightly, but we'll still celebrate ♥️

Well that was an unexpected reunion.

With his regular dog walker out of action due to injury mid-booking, I jumped in to cover remaining walks.

It's been ages since I've seen him. But, he and his people originally came to me for some training help around his confidence particularly other dogs and some recall work.

I'm pleased to say that after a brief reintroduction, he was more than happy to go out with me.

And he's been so good on his walks

Small but deadly...

Grass seeds or foxtails like this can be incredibly dangerous to all our four-legged friends.

It's that time of year when they are everywhere you go and each way you turn. Foxtails, with their sharp points, can work their way into your dog's body. The barbs all the way down them can, also, cause major damage once inside and spark all sorts of infections, amongst other things.

It's really good to check your dog all over, but, in particular, these areas:

- Paws (including between toes)
- Ears
- Around the face, especially mouth and nose
- Armpits

This last week alone, I've removed (and disposed of) countless of them from all over their bodies. Including 4 from ears, 5 from paws including between toes and another several from noses (including one that was in their nostril - another second or two and it would have been inhaled).

Having small dogs myself and long coated ones at that, it's something I have to keep an extra close eye on. Going through my puppy's coat, I removed 18 of them from her tiny body.

Rio may be 13 and deaf now, but he's definitely still small and mighty ♥️

We haven't done this type of scentwork in years (and definitely not since he lost his hearing), but it was time to test it out and see if he remembered.

This is scent discrimination - he knows to find the one scented cloth (my scent) whilst there are 5 other unscented decoy cloths out.

And yes, he still does his 'kill' shake of the correct cloth ♥️

Today is Pet Rememberance Day, so today's post is about those we've lost.

For us personally, that is Bracken (2017), Domino (2019), Millie (2021), Jet (2022) and Skylar (2024).

But, also remembering those we've lost from the wider Alexandra's Practically Pawfect.

I'd love to see pictures/hear tales of your pets as their memory lives on the more we talk about them ❤️

"When did you know you wanted to work with animals?" Is something I'm often asked.

In some ways, I've always known. For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by them. I grew up around them, all shapes and sizes- some furry, some scaly and others feathery.

Here I am with Anna, our very first dog, my childhood dog ♥️

Moving houses and locations is one of the most stressful changes we can make in life. Adding a dog to that (a dog sensitive to changes, in this case), and that stress can go up a few notches.

But, with support and pre- planning , it can become a much smoother experience for all involved.

That's one of the things we've been working towards together recently. So, to receive this message, I'm so pleased it went as smoothly as possible.

"First day in his new home . I put cushions at the window to give him a bit of privacy 😂 enrichment and finding thing games have worn him out. 😀🐶 thank you so much for your encouragement and support it has made me more relaxed about it and has helped him to relax too xx"

Back in 2019, on this day, Rio and I took a leap of faith, and we started a new chapter.

Our lives together started small, so small. Walking down the street was stressful, let alone anything more. He found other dogs and people scary. He'd scream at the top of his lungs, barking, lunging, and spinning.

Our new chapter was to embark on journeys I'd never done with a dog. Any dog, let alone one who had big feelings about life.

My boy at the time hadn't had any exposure to sheep or cattle. Never travelled on a train. Let alone journeying up to Scotland, nor moving in with people and dogs (some of whom he'd never met before).

It sounds crazy when I think of it. The goal I set for us.

We'd done a few preparation trips. But one of them was more of a setback than prep, where he was attacked by another dog, and we came so close to losing him that day.

But, we leapt together. A leap out of his comfort zone and mine.

While things didn't go exactly according to plan (for example, being chased by a herd of curious cattle but they are stories for another day), it was a beginning.

And with it, we started a new chapter of adventuring

Sun, sea, and a couple of sidekicks, just what beach trips are all about.

Plenty of time for getting sandy paws and toes, paddling in the sea and Xena was so brave and up for paddling/wading lessons in the sea 🌊
