Something to keep in mind as you head in for your spring checkups. Protect your pets! You are their best advocates.

🐾🌼Spring is here, so be expecting emails and reminder phone calls from your vet, encouraging you to schedule your spring wellness visit (please do this)—but watch my latest interview with UW-Madison vet school professor Dr. Laurie Larson, first! Dr. Larson is an expert in antibody titer testing, and thankfully, the conversation about vaccinations 💉has evolved, especially regarding how frequently our pets truly need them. In my interview, Dr. Larson provides an in-depth look at how titers can guide more personalized and scientifically sound vaccination decisions, protecting our pets without the risk of over-vaccinating.
Veterinarians have accounts with nation-wide veterinary laboratories (Antech and/or Idexx) that provide parvo and distemper titer testing services, so all vets can perform them, however, the most inexpensive lab I have found for parvo/distemper titers is the Companion Animal Vaccine and Immuno Diagnostic Service Laboratory (CAVIDS) at the UW-Madison vet school. Have you trained your dog today? I challenge you to spend 10 minutes working on one command or trick with your pup. It exercises their mind and tires them out far more than just physical exercise.

If you can’t think of a trick or command here’s a couple ideas:

Turn left
Turn right
Roll over
Back up
Touch
Place
Sit pretty
Look

Send us pics and video of you working with your pups! I try to ask a few commands before every meal. It takes only a minute and gets me working with them even when I’m too busy (or too lazy) to set time aside for training. It’s not always perfect but it’s something!

Our breed recently and unexpectedly lost a bright and shining star in Ilona Shur. The love for her dogs and Kerrie’s in particular was obvious in everything she did and said. Her friendship, kindness and the knowledge she fostered and shared will be greatly missed. As is a concern with all of us with dogs, her beloved pets are making their way to their new homes and the rescue that is helping could always use donations to cover their costs.

Let’s talk food. My favorite subject! 😬😋

As we headed into fall, our crew got very itchy. At first I thought seasonal allergies which I’m not excited about but personally I was experiencing much higher than normal symptoms so I thought perhaps we were all afflicted. Weeks turned into months and I began to fear fleas. We have a lot of pets and fleas would be a nightmare. But we couldn’t find any evidence of fleas apart from the itching. Finally we turned to diet. We switched their kibble from Acana that we have loved for years and tried the Canadian brand GO recommended to us by NorthPoint Pets & Company. Within a week there was noticeable difference and now over a month later and our guys are not itching at all. Showing us yet again let food be thy medicine snd medicine be thy food! So we wanted to update you all in case you’ve been experiencing any of the same symptoms.

Here’s a pictorial progression of our dinner with the help of our beautiful model, Sioux kitty. 🙄😜🥰 Starting with a raw turkey base by Rawganics. 2 eggs (we have backyard chickens not trust funds). Leftover blueberry smoothie with chia seeds and spinach. Apple cider vinegar. Garlic, golden paste (I’ll share a link on this later), vitamins C, D and K, super mushroom blend, probiotics…..I think that’s all. Oh forgot the cherry on top of the turkey neck.

Andy is tackling some malignant lumps after having one removed in November so she is getting daily low dose fenbendazole, quercetin, turkey tail and CBD tincture to hopefully stop but at least slow the growth of any other masses.
