Today, we said goodbye to shy, but sweet Snowcone. She was egg bound and deteriorated quickly. Since it is Saturday, the only emergency vet open that could help birds was an hour away. She died five minutes before we made it to the emergency veterinarian’s office.

You will be missed by all of us, but especially Margarita, your lifelong feather friend. She has already been searching and calling for you.

Rest In Peace.

Lucky was loving some oat groats my daughter was hand feeding him...

I am down to one boy cage and in it I have Avocado, Lucky, and Peep (a new bird re-homed to me about 6 months ago).

Updates! I am happy to announce that two sweet birdies went to a new home last week. The budgies, formally known as Starburst and Frost, have now been named Sunny and Rocket/Rocky. They look happy in their new home!

This mother/daughter duo are best of friends... They even lay eggs together! Actually, all three of these birds (photo bomb!) just finished laying eggs for the end of summer. The boys are in another cage, so they were not fertilized, and many ended up at the bottom of the cage. The ones that didn’t fall, I cooked into mini scrambled eggs and gave back to them.

Sounds crazy? It’s actually beneficial because budgies lose a lot of needed nutrients laying eggs. Giving them back their eggs as food, gives them some nutrients back keeping them healthier.

Mother/daughter egg laying team. 🥚 🥚

Sugarberry still lays, despite there not being any nesting boxes or males in the cage. Her daughter has joined her in the tradition. I have started cooking their eggs for them to eat, so that they can get some of their nutrients back.

I have some sad news. Today, our sweet Blueberry died. He lived a happy 7 1/2 years and we miss him already.

When you have two birds laying eggs, they both share the coconut nest. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have no idea whose egg I pick up every morning (parakeets lay an egg every other day), but there are no boys in the cage, so they are infertile. Like mother, like daughter.

I thought she was headed back home at about 1:35 this afternoon... Two hours later, she’s back.

Has anyone heard of pigeon racing? I hadn’t until today, when this guy stopped by for some food and water...

I was picking up my kids in carpool when my husband sent me this picture. I suggested that he catch him/her so that we could find his/her owner (it has two leg bands) and keep him/her safe in our spare cage. Do you know how big a pigeon looks in a parakeet cage? 😂

A couple of google searches later, we learned where this guy is from (Krum, TX) and that s/he is a race pigeon! I guess they drive the birds a certain distance away from their home and release them. The birds then race each other home. Who knew?!? 🤷🏻‍♀️

So, s/he is here for food, water, and shelter for the night and we’ll let him/ her return to the race in the AM. Wish him/her luck!!!

We have started calling this pretty gal Houdina.

I have feeders that hang on the outside of the cage and sometimes she squeezes by, escaping from the cage. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My son found her out today and these are the pictures my husband sent me to find out if he needed to put her in a boy cage or a girl cage.
