The answer to the question 'What is the best service dog breed?' will vary by dog trainer and that should give you pause. It really shouldn’t. But there is a reason. Let’s take a look at the sorry state of service dog training and what the criteria should be versus what they are. To explain this, I need to provide some background.

First, the service dog industry as a whole has a wash-out rate of about 50%. Wash-out means the service dog fails either during training or within the first year after deployment. A dog that washes out can no longer work and must be replaced. That means that 50% of the dogs people paid a lot of money for (e.g. $25 - $75K) have to be replaced. The service dog training contract usually outlines how/if that happens and who pays for that. This detail gives you an important indication of what kind of service dog training company you are dealing with.

Dog decompression is important! I will never forget the first several times I told a foster that the dog needs to decompress when coming into their home. They looked at me as if I was being unfair to the dog. Most humans, if they are not properly educated about crates, consider crates a source of punishment. Crates aren’t cruel, they are safe places dogs enjoy. However, if you use them as punishment, that is how the dog will look at it. Think of it this way, would you go on a cruise if the boat didn’t have cabins, go to a resort and there would be no individual rooms?

Also, sometimes foster dogs will be in several homes, and keeping the crate the same everywhere the dog goes is a source of comfort for them. The crate also encourages the strengthening of the bladder. Sometimes when fosters come into a new home, they are extra nervous. Leaving them alone to adjust will make the transition more positive, while coddling will not.

The most common challenge for service dog handlers is what to do when an establishment denies your dog access. First, make sure that you are in compliance with the law. It sounds silly to even state this, but I’ve seen a lot. For example, not all states support a service dog in training (SDiT) for public access. Also, you have to remove your dog if it is disruptive. Further, the dog can’t be off-leash.

People talking to service dogs is another common challenge for service dog handlers. I personally have the most issues with decorated vests. People don’t always read what is written on a vest, collar, or leash. Other examples are poodles with a different haircut, colored hair, or uncommon breeds. Things like these most definitely draw more attention. Understand that you may need to ask people to not distract your dog more often than you would otherwise.

Accidents happen and it is better to be prepared beforehand. This includes putting together a great first aid kit for your dog. Obviously, there are many dog first aid kits on the market and I have rarely seen one that was inherently bad. However, once you are in an emergency situation with your dog and only have one of these minimalist first aid kits, you wish you had planned better.

I have dealt with my fair share of emergency situations and have discovered which items are most valuable to have on hand and which not so much. This article covers what I have in my mobile dog first aid kit—I also have a really big one for people and dogs but that is not something I would want to carry around. The first aid kit must be small and light enough to be carried or even attached to your dog’s vest, harness, or pouch, but still contain all vital components in case things go wrong.
