Rabies roundup for August 2025. There have been nineteen new confirmed cases in KZN this month.
Tragically there was also a human death due to the rabies virus in Ugu district.
There was one case from our iLembe district, a dog from Mandeni, as well as a dog from Tongaat, eThekwini metro.
There was a sheep from King Cetshwayo district, and a cow from Harry Gwala district. The remainder of the reported cases were dogs from King Cetshwayo district, Ugu district and eThekwini metro.
Vaccination is the key to the prevention of spread of the rabies virus. Make sure your pets' rabies vaccinations are current, and please help to get the word out.

We are devastated to report the second confirmed case of human rabies in KZN this year. The deceased is from uMuziwabantu municipality, Ugu district. In July there were confirmed cases of both a dog and a sheep from this municipality. If you are concerned that you may have been exposed to a rabid animal, wash any wounds or broken skin with soap and running water immediately, before seeking medical attention without delay.

There has been a confirmed rabies case from our iLembe district. It was a stray dog which wandered into a property in Mandeni, and began attacking the resident's dogs. Make sure that your pets' rabies vaccinations are current.

Rabies roundup for July 2025. There have been twenty-two new confirmed cases of rabies in KZN for this month. There was one head of cattle from the Kokstad area in Harry Gwala district, and one sheep from Harding in Ugu district. The remainder of the cases were dogs: one from Ugu district (also Harding), three from King Cetshwayo district, and the bulk from eThekwini metro. Rabies can affect any mammal. Avoid physical contact with all wildlife, and any other animals that are not very well known to you. Make sure that your own pets' rabies vaccinations are current, and please help to spread the word.

Rabies roundup for June 2025. There have been eleven new confirmed cases of rabies in animals in KZN this month. This includes a goat and a dog from King Cetshwayo district, and dogs from uMgungundlovu district and eThekwini metro.
There was also the tragedy of a human death: a thirty-two year old man from eThekwini metro, whose unvaccinated dog bit him in March. He did not seek any treatment at the time. If you are concerned that you have been exposed to a rabid animal: wash any wounds or broken skin with soap and running water immediately for twenty minutes, before seeking medical attention without delay.

We are devastated to report that there has been human death due to rabies in KZN. The man from eThekwini metro was bitten by his own dog, and did not receive any post exposure treatment.
If you are concerned that you have been exposed to a rabid animal, wash any wounds or broken skin with soap under running water for twenty minutes immediately, before seeking medical attention without delay.

There was one jackal from Underberg in Harry Gwala district, and one bovine from Richmond in uMgungundlovu district. The remainder of the cases were all dogs: one from Zululand district, one from uMgungundlovu district and multiple cases from eThekwini metro. If you are concerned that you have been in contact with a rabid animal, wash any wounds or broken skin with soap under running water for twenty minute before seeking medical treatment without delay.

Rabies roundup for April 2025. There have been eighteen new confirmed cases of rabies in KZN this month. Three were cattle from the Kokstad area in Harry Gwala district, the remainer all dogs from various districts. Rabies vaccination of dogs is the key to rabies prevention.
