Cecil came in to our care after being taken to a local vet as a 'stray'.
At some point he was neutered but not chipped, and was guestimated to be around 18 years old.
After numerous tests at our vets, it became clear that Cecil had no quality of life and was, in fact, suffering greatly.
We waited for 7 days in the hope of an owner coming forward but sadly nobody did.
This is a situation we're sadly seeing in rescue more and more.
On Monday, we said goodbye to Cecil 🕊
Choosing euthanasia for an elderly or sick cat is one of the hardest acts of love a guardian may face. Cats often hide pain, enduring quietly long after their quality of life has faded. When comfort, appetite, and peace are gone, letting go can be kinder than asking them to suffer.
Quality of life matters more than time. Prolonging life through treatments may add stress and discomfort without real relief. Cost is also a real concern—ongoing care can become overwhelming, and financial limits do not mean a lack of love. Compassion is not measured by how much is spent, but by choosing peace over pain.
Because of this, Hector's House Cat Rescue has gratefully received a grant from Pets Foundation to help with these final costs.
Euthanasia allows a calm, gentle goodbye, surrounded by familiarity and care. The grief that follows is deep because the bond was real. In the end, letting go is not giving up—it is keeping a final promise of kindness and dignity.
