Big thanks to Winged Wellness Mobile Avian Vet Clinic for coming out to care for Deebo, one of our beloved CornishX roosters, who’s recovering from a leg injury. 🐓💛

CornishX (aka broiler) chickens are bred to grow unnaturally fast, which often leads to painful foot and leg issues. With five big-hearted CornishX roosters in our flock, it takes constant care—soaking, wrapping, and monitoring—to keep them comfortable and mobile.

We’re so grateful to Winged Wellness for their expert, compassionate, and creative care. Want to help support our CornishX crew? Consider making a donation in their honor. 💛

The evening routine! Our goats come to the barn for a snack and to go night-night after another day well lived - eating, playing, napping, enjoying the sunshine and the breeze.

[Did you know? Goats are the most eaten animal in the world.]

Four of our roosters doing what roosters do! Multiply by five and you'll have an idea what things sound like around Herd and Flock.

Every day twice a day Meghan feeds, by hand, four of our chickens who have no top beak and can't feed themselves. They would die without our help. We don't know why their beaks were removed, whether a feed store employee was being either cruel or careless, but many chicks died. We have four of the survivors.

Feeding our debeaked is a labor of love.

🥚 Egg prices aren’t high because hens have too much space. They’re high because industrial animal agriculture is a fragile, disease-prone system built on confinement and cruelty.

A new lawsuit—backed by Trump and out-of-state agriculture groups—is trying to gut California’s voter-approved law requiring more humane living space for hens. Proposition 12 passed with overwhelming support, reflecting what most people believe: animals shouldn’t suffer in cramped cages just to produce cheap eggs.

But here’s the kicker: the very industry pushing this lawsuit is the same one that helped spread the avian flu by packing birds so tightly that a single infection can spiral into mass death.

Factory farms want to blame animal welfare for their failures, when the truth is clear: overcrowding, not compassion, is the problem.

We see firsthand what animals need to thrive. It's not a cage with an extra inch or two. It’s sunlight, safety, space to stretch, dust bathe, and just be.

California voters said yes to better treatment. Let’s not let industry greed and political games undo that.

This week, a mysterious box appeared on our driveway. One of our team members, Allan, came upon it as he was heading out after his shift.

He got out of his car, placed the box on the passenger seat, and opened it. What a surprise!!

Years ago, we decided not to keep ducks because they require a lot of water. We don’t plan to keep these ducks permanently, but in the meantime, they require constant care. At this age, even a small water bowl can pose a drowning risk, so we monitor them closely. They need daily swim time—once, twice, three times a day—all under supervision. They also p**p. A lot.

Between the special food, p*e pads, and extra staff time to make sure they stay safe and clean, the costs add up quickly. It may not seem like much, but unexpected guests like these come with a price tag. $$$

Can you help us with a donation? Our donors have made it possible for us to help abandoned animals like these and we want to continue to be able to do so. But we need support. We cannot do it alone. Please consider donating right now. Go to www.herdandflockanimalsanctuary.org and click on the DONATE button at the top right. Thank you in advance for your support!

🌳🪓 Battle of the Barnyard Giants!

Our incredible volunteer Lumberjill, Piper, spent 7 hours high in the trees this week helping us manage the tangled rivalry between two of our most beloved shade providers—the Mulberry (favorite leaf snack of cows and goats) and the Stone Pine (a bark delicacy for our herd).

These trees are deeply intertwined—literally supporting each other—but also competing for space, sunlight, and strength. After recent high winds left a big mess, Piper stepped in to start training these giants to better coexist.

We’re so grateful for her skill, strength, and tree-loving heart. This is just the beginning of our plan to support and steward these vital members of the Barnyard ecosystem. 🌿🐐🐄
