🌧️🐴 Your final January update 🐴🌧️
(A Public Service Announcement)

It’s been raining for 84years.
Nothing is dry.
Everything is mud.
Time is just a concept.
My soul smells faintly of wet horse and regret.

💪🏻 Current yard achievements:

• Mucked out approximately 246 times since Monday
• Nearly died getting stuck in the mud
• Changed rugs more times than I care to remember
• Slid across the concrete yard like a baby deer
• Drank tea that tasted like the feed room
• Briefly considered selling everything and emigrating to Australia

🧠 Mental state:

“I love my horse.”
“I hate January.”
“I love my horse.”
“I hate January.”
“I love my horse.”
“I might pack it in and get a normal hobby like knitting.”

🏃 Fitness update:

• 15k steps a day
• 90% in wellies
• 100% against my will

🧥 Fashion choices:

• 3 layers minimum
• thermal breeches
• wet gloves
• hay covered socks
• mud on face
• dignity: missing

❤️ Relationship status:

Happily taken… by 2 x four-legged, mud-covered dictators with hooves and an unpredictable appetite for increasingly sparse and expensive hay.

👋🏻 Friendly reminder:

January isn’t a month.
It’s a personality test.

To everyone currently:

✔️ dragging wheelbarrows through sludge
✔️ battling the weather
✔️ changing rugs 524 times a day
✔️ questioning all life choices
✔️ whispering “spring is coming” like a prayer

👀 I see you.

💪🏻 Stay strong, fellow horse folk, for February is likely just January in a different coat BUT…

☀️ One day the sun will come out.
🌱 The ground will dry.
🤪 And we’ll all pretend we didn’t emotionally spiral and nearly give it all up!

🙈 Probably.

🤗 Do share to hopefully reach a few other fellow sufferers. Misery loves company after all!

🥰 Love always, Hx

Mares are often not as playful as geldings, in fact I’m not sure I’ve even seen a mare play bitey face game before ever so watching my thoroughbred mare Amber playing with 20 month old Cody was lovely to see, even if she was pestered in to it by him a bit 😂 She seemed happy to engage in play for a good 5 minutes, which made Cody’s day 😊

Happy New Year to one & all! Wishing everyone fun, love & laughter throughout 2026 😊🥰

In the middle of November I added some more Jelka & Mudcontrol mats to some of the existing areas & also created some new paths as well as placed more mats around feed stations etc.
Here’s how they’re holding up now after being down for 5 weeks in high traffic areas.
During this time the mats have been subjected to a lot of rain, lots of wheelbarrowing around on them & many many hooves walking over them all the time. They are a life saver for us here, if we didn’t have them then I’m sure the horses would just stand around on the concrete yard all day long.
The pics show the mats when they were freshly laid mid November to now right in the depths of this rainy, muddy winter on clay soil.
They are worth the investment & I still don’t know which I like more Jelka’s or Mudcontrol. I actually can’t decide. I really like them both for paths & feed stations. The horses don’t seem to have a preference either, I see equal usage daily. So it’s a hard one for me to pick, they seem to compliment each other nicely yet offer a different variety in surfaces for the horses.
As you can see we have lots of wet sinky mud here & the mats are doing a grand job in giving us & the horses a way of walking from feed station to feed station.
Some descriptions on the pics below.

I’m finding myself not much of a social media guru these days & haven’t prioritised posting much lately (if anything 🙈) in recent weeks, apologies for this, we are still here though having a nice peaceful time with the horses.
Really enjoyed the lovely sunny ☀️ mild & dry months of September & October 🍂🍃🍁🥰 but now we’re fully embracing the soggyness that is upon us 🤣
We did manage a bit of winter proofing by laying more mud mats, gravel & rearranged the locations of some hay boxes making it easier to feed hay this winter.
Here’s a little compilation of videos & clips of the horses here 🐴🥰
