Catcatraz

Catcatraz Located in the Tararua region, we are a small private cat rescue caring for kittens, adult cats and an occasional palliative care elderly cat.

Ex-tomcat Merlin is starting to show interest in playing! He is quite relaxed with all our other rescue cats and doesn't seem too concerned about our dog, but pats are definitely off limits still - ominous rumbles and a raised paw in warning.

This young female tabby was found in Eketāhuna on 13 July. She is estimated to be at least 8 months but no more than 12 months of age.
She is very timid around people but fine with other cats.
No response has been received to posts on local Lost and Found pages yet.
Today, the vet was preparing to spay Chipmunk (Chippy) as we've called her, BUT - CHIPPY IS ALREADY DESEXED!
She did NOT have a microchip.
Is Chippy a lost or abandoned kitten?
Is Chippy someone's missing pet?
If she was a TNR job, usually they are microchipped, ear-tipped and her ears are both intact. No ear tattoo either.
Please, share widely in case Chippy's family can be found.
A similarly aged but entire male kitten was found a few days prior to Chippy, he may or may not be related
Please get in touch if you or someone you know is missing a kitten that looks like Chippy..

Two girls and a boy kitten went to the vet for desexing today. But two boys and a girl came back!
To our surprise, Shadow is a boy! We don't often mis-gender a kitten AND have the vet do likewise at Shadow's first checkup a few weeks ago! But he's definitely a boy.
Chipmunk (Chippy) was the second surprise of the day. When they were prepping her for surgery, I got a call to say she already has a scar in the flank spay location and is already spayed! Sadly no microchip though. We will do a separate post specifically for Chippy to share far and wide in case someone is missing her.

Buttons is a very timid ex-tomcat who has formed a friendship with little Shadow the kitten! She is the extrovert to his introvert. Tonight I found her snuggled up to him and he didn't mind a bit, even when she floofed his nose with her tail and nuzzled his ear. ❤️

Buttons is a stray from Kapiti who's been with us for a few weeks. He went to the vet for a little snip yesterday and was very, very spaced out last night! He isn't ready for adoption yet but allows me to give him head scratchies now, especially if accompanied by food.
He's a big boy and is gradually learning to trust humans. He is scared of others cats but quite likes a kitten who visits him daily.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS ADOPTIONS:
These cats and kittens aren't your average friendly, adaptable family pet - they need specific environments to be safe and thrive. Please read the descriptions and think carefully about whether you can offer what they need long-term.

Daisy: This gorgeous tortie-tabby girl has had a lot of interest but her hatred of all things on 4 legs makes her a drama queen who needs a whole place to herself without any other pets. Daisy is a vocal, playful, sassy, very active 2 - 3 year old and she is very friendly with people. She can get swipey and chompy when playing or when she's fed up with you so she's not suitable for small children. A good hunter and will pick a fight with any other cat, so ideally an indoor home with a catio to help avoid fights.

Scrunchy: A little wild kitten, pale tabby, caught in our garden. Scrunchy is about 5-6 months old. She was very timid at first but we can now pat her and she loves to play with other cats. She needs someone with patience to let her warm up to them in her own time. Scrunchy has an obsession with used tea bags and will carry them around at night, leaving one on the floor for you to step on in the morning. Wool socks are also fascinating to her. Best suited to a home with no children although older quiet teens may be okay. Preferably with another playful pet companion.

Georgie: The littlest kitten in her litter, tabby Georgie is going on 9 months but is very small for her age. She is both friendly and a bit timid but when she feels safe she loves to snuggle up on a lap or in bed. She's okay with some other cats but easily scared and bullied by others. Currently her friends are a younger kitten and an old ex-tomcat. Scrunchy is very playful and craves attention. She would be okay with gentle children in a calm home environment. NOW ADOPTED 😃

Merlin: A big grey tomcat trapped on rural property, Merlin's tomcat days are over and he's not sure where he fits in yet. Estimated to be 3+ years old. He's a big cat and terrified of everything. Not ready for pats yet but will sometimes come out of his crate if I sit quietly in the catio with him, he loves to sunbath out there. Merlin will need an indoor home initially where he can take as long as he needs to slowly adapt to being a pet. For some ex-wild cats this takes many months. A room of his own is needed so he can have his own safe space. Not suitable as a pet for children and untested with other pets at this stage, although he hasn't shown any hostility towards cats coming near his crate.

Pumpkin: A chunky orange tabby, Pumpkin is also a recent ex-tom from a rural property. Age is anywhere from 3+ years. He is not at all sociable yet and stays firmly inside his crate while anyone is around. He will probably require many months of very slow adaptation to home life. An initial indoor-only home with a dedicated room of his own is needed to give him his own safe space. Not suitable as a pet for children and untested with other pets at this stage, although he hasn't shown any hostility towards cats coming near his crate. We are taking initial enquiries only for Pumpkin at this stage and he is not yet ready for adoption until he has received a standard vet check and health clearance, vaccination, microchip and desex.

----------------------
All cats and kittens are desexed, microchipped, receive at least one vaccination and have up to date flea and worm treatment prior to adoption.

Located in South Tararua, but depending on the suitability of the cat for travel, we can discuss transport to other North Island regions.

FOUND: Tabby kitten, under 1 year old. Appears to be semi-wild, missing parts of both ears probably to frostbite. Unable to check for chip or gender yet.

I've had a couple of glimpses of a fleeing kitten from our garden the last few days and set the traps. Tonight we were successful and the kitten is now safe and warm inside.

What shall we call our little half-eared kitty?

08/07/2025

Georgie is hard at work making biscuits in her bed. All her siblings have found homes now and she's wondering if there's a special somebody out there for her too.
Georgie is the smallest of the litter and is rather insecure. She needs a lot of attention but isn't keen on other cats much, although she was fine with slightly younger kittens and her siblings. Dogs are quite scary for her and young children are best avoided.
We are in no hurry to move Georgie on and will wait for the right home for her.

FOUND: Adult ginger tabby was trapped on a Nireaha Road, Eketāhuna property yesterday. No microchip. Not friendly but calm in crate, definitely not feral. In good physical condition but will not allow itself to be handled so cannot tell if male or female.
Temporarily named Pumpkin, if this is your cat they have been given to us now to care for and we will hold for at least 7 days while we make enquiries to try to find the owner.

Rescue cats and kittens seeking loving homes:

Buddy:
Male, black, approx 2 years old.
A TNR barn cat for most of his life, Buddy made the switch to being a smoochy inside boy in literally a day. He's used to lots of other cats and is okay with dogs if they're gentle. He is learning a few new social skills, such as not to smooch so hard that he gives you a black eye, the laundry tub is not a second litterbox and the vacuum will not eat him. He will grab your hand and lick you hard so small children are not recommended for him.

Daisy:
Female, tabby/tortie, approx 2-3 years old.
Daisy was a young mother with lots of kittens before she was given to us. Now she's fixed and able to enjoy playtime for herself without pesky little ones always around. She's very vocal and sassy, not suitable for small children as she likes to playbite. Other cats and dogs are a firm no - she will fly at them. Daisy needs plenty of climbing and playing equipment to prevent boredom. She is most likely a good hunter.

Frida, Georgie & Carmen:
All female, approx 8 months old. Carmen is black, Frida and Georgie are tabbies. Frida has the distinctive twin-line patten in her back stripe, Georgie's is more spotty.
3 sisters who are all playful, affectionate and friendly. Georgie is the most talkative and has opinions, Frida is the first in line for food, and Carmen is a snugglebug always looking for a lap. They would be suitable for gentle children and can be adopted as singles or in any pair combination. They are curious towards other cats and dogs but haven't had much exposure to them yet.

An adoption fee of $100 per cat applies, or $150 for a bonded kitten pair.
All cats and kittens come desexed, microchipped, up to date flea and worm treatment and have received at least one vaccination.
Location is South Tararua but transport can be discussed for most North Island regions.
When messaging, please tell us about yourself, your home, family, other pets and why you want to adopt this cat. We ask questions to ensure it's the right fit for all. 😊

I was taking a kitten to its new home today when I saw a post on a local page, "Free kitten".
Free kittens often fall into the wrong hands and without proper vet checks and desexing before adoption, they are at great risk.
Luckily for wee Shadow, I was quick enough to respond to the ad and she is now safe at home with us.
Welcome, Shadow! You'll be off to the vet for a check up next week and in time you'll be up for adoption.
