I planted these onions back in March, and then something unexpected happened. Last year’s leftover lettuce seed began sprouting between the rows. At first, I thought, “Hey, this might actually help suppress weeds once summer hits.”

When I looked it up I found onions and lettuce make excellent companions!

Here’s why this intercropping works:
• Lettuce grows quickly and helps shade out weeds early in the season
• Onions are slow to canopy, so they don’t mind the early competition
• The lettuce acts like a living mulch, conserving soil moisture and maximizing space
• Both crops benefit from shared nutrients and airflow when spaced right

Nature always knows what it’s doing! This happy accident turned into a win-win

Do you want to learn how to grow a lot of food in a little space? We will be hosting University of Illinois Extension - DuPage Kane & Kendall Counties 2 hour workshop Sunday May 18th. I will be teaching our growing methods, irrigation planning, season extension, crop selection, hands on tool demonstrations and backyard strawberries!

Join us for our first "Meet Your Farmer" event in May! From growing medium options to planting and irrigation, we will talk all things field prep as we visit Barbic Farms in Wayne.

This is a great opportunity for fellow farmers, gardeners, or those who just want to learn about their local food and meet the farmer growing it. This event includes a field tour and a hands-on activity to learn more about how to improve or add new growing practices to your farm or garden.
