It’s a lesser-known fact that there are tons of rules to follow while operating a rescue. When choosing who to adopt from, it’s very important to examine what’s happening behind the scenes, which is admittedly difficult to do if you don’t even know what you’re looking for. So we thought we would share a few pointers.
Most Rescues have to be registered in the states that they operate (aka adopt/foster) in, especially if they are having animals cross state lines. What makes this tricky, is that every state has different requirements to operate. Responsible rescues are sure to follow the individual requirements for each state. It seems pretty simple, but you would be amazed at how many operations flagrantly disregard state and federal laws.
A great place for you to start is by opening a dialogue with the rescue you are considering. Ask if they are registered, and in good standing, in your state. They should be able to provide you with verifiable documents. Usually, a simple google search can give you some background information. Try the terms “dog rescue registration state of ….”. This will often lead you to your state’s Dept. of Agriculture, and from there you look up what the regulations are and look up registered rescues.
Here’s an example: The state of MA requires rescues to be registered (you can look that up on their state website). If the dog you’re adopting is coming from out of state, the dog needs to quarantine for 48 hours at an approved facility. The dog also needs a health certificate from the state it came from, as well as a vet visit by a MA vet after arrival. Yikes! While it seems like a lot of hoops to jump through, responsible rescues will do it so they can get their dogs into the loving arms of their new families.*
So before picking up your new BFF be sure to do a little digging to ensure the rescue you support is on the up and up.
*A side note, when you wonder why adoption fees are so “high” this is partially why. Rescues have to budget in these expenses to do things right.
If you know of a rescue who does all the right things, show them some love and let us know about them.
