Yesterday Sora pulled her weight and THEN some.

We went on a 3.6 mile scooter ride with our friends (dog friends and human friends!) near Cougar, Washington. The weather was lovely, nice and cool even in the afternoon, though we did get some rain showers that Sora thought were VERY dumb.

This fall has been damp enough that the big-leaf maples are in full fall color, and their bright yellows against the deep green of Douglas-fir, pale blue mist, and the hint of snow on mountains was a visual feast.

Once we got going, Sora kept her line tight, even on the long uphill slog back to the trailhead.

And more impressive, when the nut on the rear tire vanished and the tire was wobbling and making a horrible noise, she just leaned in and WORKED. The photos are right before I realized the tire had nothing keeping it attached anymore. The tire would fall out if I didn't keep weight on it, so I stayed on the scooter and alternated helping Sora and holding the bolt in with my boot.

None of us had any repair kits. :p Yay, first run of the season? Note to self: get your pre-season checklist done, kthxbai.

I am writing to encourage you to attend, peacefully, and with the love of our country in your heart, a No Kings rally tomorrow, along with Jim and I. I don’t say this lightly—if you follow me, you know that I avoid talking about “politics” on social media. But this rally isn’t about supporting Democrats or Republicans, it is about standing up for what we are in the process of losing unless we make ourselves heard—the very essence of the United States of America. That you can’t “disappear” people because of the color of their skin or the language they speak. That we don’t use military troops in our own cities to intimidate people in cities you target because of their politics. That we don’t prosecute people and try to jail them because you don’t like what they say, ignoring the constitutional right of due process. That we don’t gut federal agencies that are working to keep us healthy, to protect our food, and to protect this gorgeous land in which we live. That we don’t use government offices to enrich our bank accounts while people lose their health insurance. I could go on, but it is clear to millions of us that, shockingly, our country is devolving into an autocracy in which power, money, and fear are used to control its citizens. I don’t like writing this on this forum—a place that is reserved for people whose love for dogs is as deep as mine. But staying silent feels like I too am being stifled by fear. Desperate times call for desperate measures -- Join us at a peaceful rally where we take the time to prove what our country still is—by the people and for the people. Sing it with me: Our country ‘tis of thee . . .of thee I sing.

Sora sporting the latest fashion at the SKAMF specialty this weekend in Kennewick, WA. That waist is snatched!
.. she had an ultrasound back in July and got shaved. Yes, it does indeed look ridiculous and we didn't get any placements. We still had a good time with SKAMF and CAMEO malamutes (and their people)!

Also big thanks to the folks that came from out of the region, it was lovely to see you and your dogs in the ring!

Story time!

So it's Thursday night post-dinner and I've had a long and stressful work day. The weather is just how I like it - cool and cloudy - with crickets and confused frogs singing. Sora and Renka are outside, and the back door is open so they can come and go as they like.

Which you'd think I'd learn to stop doing after the Skunk Incident.

Anyway. I'm curled up in the Pillowsac, nested into cushions with a fuzzy soft blanket and watching Wednesday when the bell... rings. I think "Huh. Odd, the door's open." So I ignore it.

The bell rings again.

"Sora, the door is open, you can come in if you want!"

She doesn't come in. I shrug and continue disassociating until the show is over, then do some things around the house. I hear a WHINE.

THAT gets my attention.

Sora is close to the back door, and BADLY wants in. But her ears are sideways, her tail tucked, and she keeps giving the door a wide berth as she paces back and forth.

That's when I saw it.

The ANKHEG OF DOOOOOOOOM.

I giggle and take some photos (of course I do - it's a California Root Borerer), and then hold the screen back folded over the beetle so the dogs can come in.

She is AFRAID of it. She approaches then backs away three times before I REFOLD the screen so the beetle is further away from the door's edge and she SKEDADDLES into the house like this beetle was coming for her SOUL.

I'm still giggling.

That face.
