We don’t expect anyone to remember all the horses we talk about here over the years. And this picture may seem innocuous. But this boy….. this dream of a gentleman ….. he belonged all his life to the same woman who passed away in her mid 80s, leaving behind a late teens gelding. Headed to 20 years of age. And pretty much everyone knows that can be a death knell for a horse.

Then he was sent through an auction loose, without showcasing any of his attributes. So was his whole herd. We watched as one after another went to the kill buyers. When he came through we couldnt let it happen. Just could NOT. World class blood lines, gaited, papers with him…. In a different world his price would have been five figures at Least. In that auction he didn’t break the thousand threshold but he came to the refuge. And he let everyone ride him, he loved on everyone, and every time we offered him to a select home it was the same answer… “Too old. I want someone younger.” This boy had a PERFECT life, impeccable training, yet nobody would look past his age?? Until…… well, until the perfect horse girl came along. Through the right connections she came here, he went there, and today she told me how she rode him ba****ck and how he has made her dreams come true. Inspired her. Loves her. And she loves him.

He’s her angel. She is his forever. We pray for a hundred more stories like this one to heal the broken hearts that come into our care. And we are eternally grateful for the beautiful friends who partner with us and work beside us for these outcomes. They are our tribe. We miss this boy…. He was a favorite but oh, the tears that are shed each time we receive news of his new life. ADOPT. You won’t be sorry. Maybe YOUR love story will be next. ❤️

This is one of the unseen faces of rescue. Our team has been awake for almost 72 hours with a mare who had a less than perfect delivery, a baby struggling to thrive who has not latched yet at 30+ hours and now with a NG tube for sustenance to stay alive. We are milking every hour on the hour around the clock and feeding the same schedule. Sleeping in dog beds on the barn floor with maybe 10-15 minutes sleep grabbed here and there while fighting to keep this tiny one alive….STOP BREEDING INDISCRIMINATELY!!!. And for the love of God, if your mare is pregnant do NOT send it to an auction. This is the 3rd baby this year in our three pregnant refuge mares and only 1 of 3 is not requiring around the clock care. We are tired. These souls deserve so much better.
God bless the souls who work so hard to pick up the pieces of mankind’s callous disregard for others.

This is one of my favorite images from the rescue. Daina Rigot putting Esmeralda and Jezebel and a baby boy who was here temporarily away in the barn at Christmas. If you have followed us over the years you will remember these girls.

Today they went to a beautiful forever home and I could not bring myself to watch them leave because I love them so much. The high country is really no place for these desert animals. I adore the long ears but we are at peace that these two have gone to a better climate for them and someone who can keep them the rest of the years of their lives. So even though I am admittedly crying as I make this post, I recognize this is why we exist - to take beautiful souls from less than positive circumstances and help them on their journeys to the best outcomes. I will miss you, sweet hee haws.

Look at Chartreuse! This girl came to us wild as the wind. Completely unhandled. She went to Nik Rauterkus for training but turned out she was pregnant. He nursed her SOUL back to health while helping her deliver her baby. When her baby was grown up it worked out that she went back to Nik! He is the only human she has ever trusted and I cried when I got this picture tonight. That is a soul connection between these two. The most perfect outcome for both these beautiful souls. Nik Rauterkus
