🐾 Minka’s Story: A Sign (or a Great Excuse) 🐾
This year, after saying goodbye to two beloved dogs who lived long, wonderful lives—one a shepherd mix—I told myself I wasn’t ready for another. There were still other dogs in the house, and my heart needed time. But, as these things go, I found myself scrolling through the Washington German Shepherd Rescue site... and then I saw her. Minka. Those ears. Those eyes. That face.
At the time, I wasn’t looking for a female dog—I've always gravitated toward the energy of boy dogs. But weeks later, when I inquired about a different puppy (who wasn’t a fit for my small Yorkie), I saw Minka was still there. It felt like a sign. Or at least, the perfect excuse.
The day before Thanksgiving, Minka came for a visit. She was shy at first, but it didn’t take long for her confidence to shine through. She moves like a warrior—agile, strong, and always thinking. At 46% German Shepherd, 34% Blue Heeler, 13% Malinois, and 7% Dutch Shepherd, she’s built for endurance and intelligence, with just the right amount of mischief. She studies everything, sizes up situations quickly, and once she decides she’s safe, she commits fully—to running, playing, learning, and loving. Her favorite game? Chasing the laser (yes, the cat toy!) in the yard at night, zooming like a streak of pure joy.
It’s only fitting, then, that her name is Minka. Though her foster family had called her something else, I reverted to the name she had on the rescue site. Minka is a Polish word meaning "With Gilded Helmet"—a name that carries echoes of warriors past, symbolizing strength and valor. And that’s exactly who she is: fearless yet thoughtful, playful but deeply loyal, always watching, always ready.
For all her energy, though, she has an incredible internal off switch. When it’s time to settle, she does. She sleeps with me at night, always respectful to leave room for the Yorkie and one of the cats (the other cat still keeps her distance). During the day, she’s happy to nap in my office while I work, content just to be nearby. She’s not allowed in the kitchen, but when I’m there, she’s always stationed at the doorway—waiting patiently for a treat, or playing, or napping while keeping one eye on me.
She has a couple of good friends who visit a few days a week, so she gets plenty of playtime. Dog parks, though? She’s still figuring those out. All those curious dogs can be a little overwhelming, but we’re working on it.
I loved her the moment she came to me. But, as it happens, I’ve been navigating some loss lately, and I can’t even begin to imagine going through this grieving process without her. She was meant to be here. And I’m so grateful she is.
Thank you, Washington German Shepherd Rescue, for bringing this incredible girl into my life. ❤️
