The Dog Listener Way The Dog Listener Way helps dog owners build stronger relationships with their dogs by sharing method

13/07/2020

Hello and welcome to the Dog Listener Way page.

I started this page as a resource for dog owners who are looking for ways to improve the lives of their dogs as well as their own relationship with their dogs.

A big part of this is using the methods prescribed by Jan Fennell and her Dog Listener Methodology.

My wife and I foster dogs on a regular basis and learn so much out of every dog we bring into our home. This methodology has allowed us to help dogs with a wide variety of behavioral issues ranging from separation anxiety and fearfulness to dog aggression, food aggression, and more.

I hope you find the information posted here useful and helpful. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or ideas for posts that you would like to see.

All of our fosters come from the Humane Society of North Central Florida. This organization does a wonderful job of bringing dogs in from kill shelters all over northern Florida. If you can, please donate to help support their work.

Does your dog struggle with meeting new dogs?

This is a VERY common problem. Our current foster Sam was used as a bait dog early in his life. As a result he has a VERY difficult time meeting new dogs as he didn't understand the difference between playing and real aggression.

This video was a great help in getting his energy in the right place to meet a new dog.

A great interview with Jan Fennell explaining her methodology of training and existing with dogs.

If we want our dogs to be happy and relaxed anywhere we ask them to go we first have to have their complete trust.

Are you interested in making your dog's food? While it IS a lot of work it is very rewarding. We noticed an immediate difference in our dog Sam's coat when we started feeding him a homemade raw food diet.

I mentioned the Pet Health and Nutrition Center in a previous post. They have quite a few good resources on their website. Check out the comments section for a link to their take on how to make your own food.

So one of our foster dogs, Sam, recently had a case of immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). The suspicion is that it was brought on by a vaccine given to him when he arrived at our local shelter.

Packed Cell Volume (PCV) tends to drop in anemic dogs. Average PCV counts are between 35% and 55%. Sam's got as low as 8% and we almost lost him. A couple of blood transfusions, and a couple days later, he was at 18%.

He was immediately put on a strong cocktail of drugs including prednisone. Since then I've been doing A LOT of research into natural treatments.

I came across a wonderful resource called the Pet Health and Nutrition Center . (link in the comments). Not only do they offer supplements, they also offer wonderful advice on how to make your own dog food, what ratios of macronutrients dogs need etc.

We're trying their IHMA supplement kit and so far it has made quite a difference in his energy levels.

We've also been making all of his food for the last few weeks to help his system rebuild.

At last check his PCV had climbed to 38% and he has been taken off a couple drugs. Hoping that this week we can start dropping dosages of the last 2 drugs.

For those who are unfamiliar with the methodology of Dog Listening, here is a great synopsis.

It covers the 4 times when dogs establish and re-establish the pack hierarchy. Short but great read.

I am a Dog Listener trained by Jan Fennell herself. Her methods of working with dogs are highly effective and every time I work with a client this is confirmed. Dog Listening is a holistic approach and separation anxiety is just one of the many issues that can be resolved by using the method as a wh...
