Training Tip for DogSter: Master "Go to Mat/Place"! 🎯
Teaching your dog the "Go to Mat" or "Place" command is one of the best ways to teach them to settle and be calm when you need them to (e.g., when guests arrive, during dinner, or at a cafe).
How to Teach "Place" (The Relaxation Protocol):
Introduce the Mat: Put a dog bed, towel, or blanket down and throw a few treats on it. As your dog steps onto the mat to eat the treats, immediately say your cue word, "Place" or "Mat!"
Lure and Reward: Once they are on the mat, use a food lure to encourage them to lie down. When they settle, continuously reward them with treats every few seconds for staying calm on the mat.
Build Duration: Gradually increase the time between rewards. The goal is to reward the calmness itself. If they get up, calmly put them back on the mat and restart with shorter durations.
Introduce Distance & Distraction: Once they can stay calmly for a minute or two, start walking a step away and coming back to reward them. This builds reliability even when you aren't right next to them.
Key to Success: The mat should be a place where only good things happen (treats, chews, or quiet time). Never use the mat for punishment.
