Jacob's Den - APS Equine Developing, Enriching and Nurturing wellbeing through horses for the most vulnerable children and young people in our community.

All enquires: Val Atkin 07984 240777 Jacob's Den is a new not-for-profit organisation that aims to Develop, Enhance and Nurture wellbeing through horses for children, young people and also those with additional needs or mental health challenges in our community. We follow HETI guidelines for the welfare of all our horses and most of our horses originally came to us from welfare organisations or ha

ve been donated to us from homes where they could no longer be cared for. Our Centre is run by Val Atkin and our volunteers. Val has been an SEND and also mainstream teacher for 30 years. Val has owned horses for over 40 years, has trained with the RDA and is a qualified UKCC Pony Club Coach. All our sessions are non-riding and no experience is necessary. We already run HAF activities for SEND children in the school holidays and we can now open our gates to others in our community. We offer bespoke family/group activities from £15 and also a Saturday morning club runs between 10:30 and 1pm every week which is £15.

A wet start to our final HAF Tuesday of Easter brought some much needed rain to the paddocks. The joy of a Spring walk in a damp woodland was much appreciated by horses and humans😊We still have Jacob’s Den sessions this week. Friday’s session is exclusively for CIC/LAC children and Young People and their families and is at the reduced fee of £10. Saturday morning sessions are open to all children and we will soon be re-starting our Thursday evening sessions for 11years and older. Please visit our website jacobsden.org for further details 😊

!!!Non- HAF Spaces still available Thursday 17th April and every Saturday morning!!! WOW!!! What a busy day. We began the day with lots of scratches and brushing in the paddocks to help get rid of the Winter hair. Beau definitely loved his scratches then went to mutually groom Colours through the fence! We were so worried about Romeo missing his friends and missing out on the fun that we moved our activities to his paddock today. We washed then moved the equipment so he could see everything that was happening. Beau stood with Romeo to keep him company then had a go round by himself. Beau had a huge jump over the poles so we thought we would leave the jump until another day 😄We also started some Spring planting by using an old feeder and filling it full of soil to grow some strawberry plants. If you would like to book a session with us please visit our website: jacobsden.org🙂

!!!Non- HAF spaces still available for Thursday 17th April and every Saturday morning!!! A catch up on Friday and Saturday. We had a visit from Sandy of Equine endo/equi-lab, FWEC on Friday. Some of our visitors got to use her microscope to check for worms in the horses faeces. Sandy also weighed most of the horses on her scales and checked them over with a verdict on their body score. Our visitors learned how check for body condition and recorded all the information. We had a visit from the vet in the afternoon to give annual vaccinations to those who were due and also take bloods to check on insulin and glucose levels for Hero and Romeo. Hero’s blood was also tested to measure his cortisol and ACTH levels to check his medication is at the correct levels. Sadly we think Romeo has the beginnings of laminitis but the vet thinks it’s been caught early and a few weeks of special care (and lots of extra scratches and cuddles) should see him right again 🥰

!!! OMG WE HAVE GOT SUCH EXCITING NEWS AT JACOB’S DEN !!! We are so very lucky to have two miniature horses- Beau and Romeo - come to join us!!! We are hoping Beau will be out and about soon- visiting Special Schools, Children’s Homes and many more places, bringing something special to many young people. He has done many ‘inside’ jobs 🤣 before, starring on TV with Alexander Armstrong, where he was a bell boy for a day and also visiting hospices around the Grantham area. He has special ‘Build a Bear’ boots that help prevent him slipping on the floor. Romeo has also joined us and lives up to his name as he has won many hearts (and rosettes) in the showing ring. We are hoping that some of our young visitors might ‘show’ him again in the future- how amazing that would be. Watch this space to follow the progress of these super special boys. We expect lots of you will be meeting them soon!!! 😊

!!!!IT’S HAF TIME AGAIN!!!! We are all very excited at Jacob’s Den- the Easter HAF website goes live TODAY-Tuesday 18th March . All information will be on the HAF website. Our spaces are SEND only, so please make sure your child qualifies before booking as we may not be able to complete your booking. We will be having two days for ALL children SEND and non/SEND during the holidays on top of our HAF days and usual JD days- dates to be announced soon but unfortunately we cannot accept HAF vouchers for those days. We have been heavily oversubscribed in previous holidays and we are very aware that parents/carers do not always have access to the vouchers at the same time so, to make it as fair as we can, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to access all the sessions you book. This is so we can include as many children and young people as possible who are booked onto the waiting list. Hope to see you soon!!! 😊

Hair, hair everywhere!!! Most of the ponies have started shedding their coats, especially the minis- Colours and Woody. We gathered it all up and put it in the trees and bushes for the birds to collect for nest building. Their chicks will be warm and cosy!!!
