Hey all! Anja Andjelic and I are leading a prey drive related event in April! Outside of my training with clients, I also train in reward based bite sport. I helped run and photograph a bite sport event this weekend and it got me thinking about the intersection of bite sports and prey drive in “real life.” A big piece of well meaning advice that gets tossed out a lot is to be “more exciting” than the squirrel - or the decoy.
My specific sport has a lot of ”prey based bites” including a call off - we send the dog for a bite on a decoy and recall the dog last second. I promise you, nothing I possibly offer can be as good as a decoy to a bitey dog! Much like a deer in the woods, my dog is not returning to me because she likes me better or because I am “more exciting.” I’m pretty sure that all my dogs would in fact happily be feral in the woods 😅
While there are many parts of the puzzle, some of the biggest pieces for me are a reliably reinforcing reward strategy, only asking my dog to do what they are capable of, and training a call off picture out of context. The tricky part? All of these things look different for different dogs!
Drop your questions, thoughts, and prey drive related training challenges below! We are excited delve into this complex topic!

Big news! We have been quiet on social media lately because we moved from NJ to Missouri! While we will sorely miss our awesome East coast friends and clients, we are excited for this change - for more land for our personal dogs to enjoy, and to bring kind and effective training to our new home in Lincoln county and St Charles county Missouri. We are still working through some logistics with business registration in a new state but reach out now to get on our waitlist!

Today was nail trimming and teeth brushing day around here! While 2/3 of my dogs are cooperative and easy, my Frenchie Arlo is in the process of learning that nail trims are not scary!! Previously, arlo would bite, scream, and p*e to get away from nail trims. Now, he’s learning to, if not love, then deal with and consent to, paw handling and nail trims! I often hear from clients that their dogs are impossible to trim nails on and even that they have to be sedated at the vet or sent to the groomer to get them done! This doesn’t have to be you and your dog. There is a better, more peaceful way forward. Is this you and your pup? If so, I’d love to chat!

Board and train JoJo got to work outside of a pet smart today! She jumps on new people out of anxiety, so we are teaching JoJo that she doesn’t need to address every person, and that random people aren’t going to walk up and pet her. Good advocacy goes a long way with dogs like JoJo!
