You won’t see this very often!
Trey,” a Bouvier des Flandres, was not only a multiple conformation champion, he earned herding titles on sheep and cattle from the AKC, the American Herding Breed Association, and the Australian Shepherd Club of America. Nat Purebred and a big credit to the photographer!.

He really is this sweet.

This traditional shepherd’s hut stands on the Elveden Estate, near the villages of Eriswell and Icklingham in Suffolk.

Once a familiar sight across the rural landscapes of England, shepherds’ huts were mobile dwellings used during lambing and grazing seasons, allowing shepherds to live close to their flocks in remote pastureland.

Typically constructed with a curved corrugated iron roof, timber frame, and cast-iron wheels, these huts were both functional and modestly furnished, often containing a small stove, a fold-down bed, and storage for tools and provisions.

Did All Border Collies Descend From Old H**p?

🐶 Did All Border Collies Really Come from “Old H**p”? Here’s What the History Shows

You may often hear that every pure Border Collie can be traced back to a legendary dog named Old H**p. While it’s true he had an enormous influence, calling him the “father” of the breed is mostly accurate, the full story is more nuanced (and pretty fascinating).

🔍 Who Was Old H**p (and Why Does He Get So Much Credit)?

Old H**p was born in Northumberland, England, in 1893 and died in 1901.

He was bred by a shepherd named Adam Telfer, from two working collies: his sire Roy (black & tan) and his dam Meg (black, strong-eyed). Old H**p was a tri-coloured dog. Note: the photo is in "black & white".

His herding style was quiet, low-key, and intense. Sheep responded very well to him, and his working manner became a model for many shepherds.

Over his lifetime, he sired around 200 pups, making him extremely influential in working collie lines.

Many later trial‑winning Border Collies carried his blood.

📚 What About the Border Collie Registration System?

The formal “registration” for working Border Collies began with the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS).

The ISDS was established in 1906, and soon after they set up a stud book to record working sheepdog pedigrees.

Old H**p, who died before the ISDS stud book began, was posthumously given ISDS stud‑book number 9, highlighting his importance. 'Old Maid' was the first to be registered.

In 1915, the term “Border Collie” was formally used to distinguish working herding dogs registered by the ISDS from the more show‑oriented “Collies” registered with the Kennel Club.

Historically, there are two main registries: the ISDS (for working Border Collies) and kennel clubs for pedigree/show lines. There are more registries now.

✅ Did All Modern Border Collies Really Descend from Old H**p?

Saying “all pure Border Collies” descend from Old H**p is an oversimplification, but it’s largely true in terms of his influence on working lines.

Not every line stems exclusively from him: other working collies in the late 1800s and early 1900s contributed to the breed too.

Over time, particularly in trial‑winning circles, his style and bloodline became very dominant.

✨ Some Interesting Tidbits

Old H**p’s working “style” - quiet, steady, and highly efficient - is considered a prototype for the classic Border Collie working style.

His ISDS pedigree number ( #9) is a reminder: even legendary dogs are sometimes registered after the breed’s formal systems start.

While hugely influential, other key dogs later shaped modern Border Collies ....... champions like Wiston Cap had a massive impact.

The Border Collie breed name (as we know it) wasn’t “official” until the ISDS distinguished working Border Collies from show Border Collies. This was a split based on purpose, not just looks.

Bottom line:

Many modern working Border Collies trace back to Old H**p, and his legacy is huge. But it’s not quite accurate to say every Border Collie descends solely from him. The breed’s history is richer and built on more than one dog.
