Gouldian breeding season is finally upon us with birds on eggs! We are running a bit late this year as the birds often start in August but that's OK, baby gouldians are welcome whenever they arrive! We let our birds naturally decide when to begin their season in the fall as they are kept together as one flock all year round.

The bonus with keeping canaries is while all the gouldians create precious babies, the canaries are in their singing season. What a lovely thing to listen to all winter!

This delay in season may mean gouldian chicks may not be ready at the usual June time. We don't sell birds until their first adult molt is 90% or more finished. The molt starts when it starts. The birds seem to decide when! The molt is physically stressful and any outside stress like a new home can stop the molt entirely, leaving the bird in its olive baby colour until next year's molt.

This fall Western Canada has another spike in H1N1 cases in birds, meaning our biosecurity is even stricter. While we don't allow aviary viewing during gouldian breeding season anyway, we now spray the bottoms of all shoes with Virkon-S if they plan to come in the front door for a social visit or pickups and deliveries - which is nowhere near the aviary part of the property.

We love our birds and take their health and by extention YOUR health extremely seriously.

We have entered gouldian breeding season and I have more pairs this year. Hopefully I will have birds available for sale next June! Last season I was sold out before even posting anything for sale!

I've added blue to my genetics but blue chicks likely won't be available for sale until 2027.

I have some canaries from the recent breeding season for sale that I will be posting soon.

Tips and tricks from a breeder of birds for 30 years.

Neonatal feeding tubes for humans snipped into appropriate lengths and then stuck into the end of a 1ml oral syringe makes for an excellent crop needle for handfeeding or administering medications. 8 French size works great for canaries. For the really little guys I used a 5 French.

Eggbinding is not a nightmare emergency if you know what to do and act quickly and palpate the location of the egg. The hen will most likely start pushing as you do this. Continue to help her push the egg out. VERY SLOWLY so as not to tear the cloaca. Let her body open the cloaca on her own. A rubbery egg can safely burst within the hens body and be passed like stool. Since eggbinding is almost always a rubbery egg this can happen and can sometimes be the safer alternative to extremely small finches such as thrme smaller wax bill species

If the eggbound hen is hypothermic and unable to move you can, in a pinch mix some sugar water up to give her by the aforementioned crop needle. You csn even drip it one drop at s time on the point of her besk to swallow. My protocol however is mixing a strong dose of Vitilize from Morningbird, your handfeeding formula of choice, make the mixture somewhat watery, and gavage the mix at the amount of 1ml for most finch species into the crop. Set the bird aside in a warm, dark box.

I likely won't have birds available this season as I have a waiting list I need to sell to first. But here is a yellow fledgling we can all enjoy looking at.

British Columbia has a large outbreak of H1N1. Anyone coming from, or that has been in BC or in contact with someone who has been in BC in the last 6 weeks cannot enter the property of Finches of Splendor under further notice.

EDIT: This rule now includes Alberta. As this outbreak moves East, it will likely mean the aviary itself is temporarily unviewable for people purchasing birds or anyone visiting the property. Photos are always available if you want to see how we raise our birds here!
