Back from a lovely weekend away! Cooper had a great time and I am so proud of how he did.
We challenged him with some new and tough situations of visiting York and being in the same Airbnb as another dog but he was amazing. The rain put a stop to some fun as he definitely cannot cope when it is torrential and he gets cold. He is a tired boy after a weekend of adventures.

I have hopefully gotten back to everyone that has emailed, submitted booking forms or messaged in some way. If you are waiting to hear back from me please let me know! 🥰

Happy Friday!
Hope your weeks have gone well. Autumn feels well and truly here this week.
I am away on a long weekend trip so will be off work until Tuesday! Responses and emails will be delayed.
Cooper is being put to the test of how well his training is progressing for this little holiday.

Wish us luck! Fingers crossed he does well and this opens the doors for more adventures

Classes are a great way to train your dog. With other dogs for distractions and filled with exercises and skills you may never have even thought of you can build your knowledge and meet other owners.
I run my classes at Stilton Dog Field which is a fantastic location for safety but also with a farm beside we teach the dogs in class to be neutral around horses and livestock.
Suitable for puppies and adult dogs, mixing ages together is great for puppy socialisation and also challenging for the older dogs to learn to disengage from playful puppies.

My next set of Classes begin on the 12th October: https://www.lucycrookdogtraining.com/services-2

Top Tip to give your training a boost!

Rewards can be a faff at times, every feel like you're emptying a full bag of treats into their mouth or worried about potential weight gain with the volume of rewards being used?
1. don't worry about lowering meal volume to account for treats
2. don't stop rewards! it's easy to rush to stop rewarding behaviours but this can stop our training in its tracks.
3. use rewards in tubes! Primula cheese and liver paste are some of my favourite rewards, the dogs feel like they're getting a high value treat but they are getting a small amount compared to normal treats. They last ages compared to bag of treats and are easy to take with you!

Have you ever tried primula cheese or meat pastes for your training?

A few fun facts about me. I think it is so important to get to know your dog trainer as I will get to know you, your life and your dog well to help with your training journey. You want a trainer you feel able to speak openly with and that you get on with to bring up concerns or have honest discussions about progress and achievements without feeling judged or worried.

Motivation Monday!
Meet this beautiful girl. She is a young rescue with a curious but nervous nature. We've been working on building her confidence and teaching her techniques to feel better when on walks, and not reacting to people and dogs we see.
She has come on leaps and bounds. We are now able to see dogs and watch them pass without reaction, and she is learning if she feels overwhelmed we can create space. Watching and listening to her cues to keep her comfortable and for her to learn she is safe has been crucial for her making progress in a positive direction 🥰

A year ago I met this wonderful girl. A bright pup turning into a frustrated teenager. She wanted to say hello to every dog and person and would lead bite and really frustrated when she didn't get her way (typical teen!)
We've been working together for a year, through a few seasons and a phantom pregnancy, helping her and her owners navigate the teenage phase to make sure no bad habits stick. Building engagement, helping her impulse control and helping her with her frustration tendencies.
On Monday I took her on our last training walk and she was amazing, loose lead, no fixating on people or dogs, no worries or frustration. Just fun together.
I'm going to miss seeing her every week or two for our sessions together but I know she has a lifetime of adventures and fun with her family that they can take her wherever they like with confidence she can manage and have fun 🥰

My job is amazing, but hard to say goodbye to all the dogs I bond with through our training together. Just know, every dog I work with stays in my head and I think about them all. Wondering how they are doing and what adventures they might be getting up to ❤
If you're looking for a dog trainer that cares, my heart is full of love for the dogs I work with and I'll always put them first.

Happy Friday!
How has your week been?
Cooper has been a clever boy this week with his walking and reactions to dogs and cats. We've got some new treats which seem to hit the spot for him!
We had a vet check-in to chat about chemical castration and x-rays for his hips as we believe he has some pain/issues.
Pain is one of the common reasons dogs become reactive so it is always important to voice any concerns with your vets.
Our vets are amazing and immediately listened to our concerns and are taking us seriously so I couldn't be happier Station Bridge Veterinary Surgery

One of the most common reasons I get called in for training walks is a dog that is great off-lead but struggles with dogs/people etc when on lead.
We want to think about their emotional state and what is the cause of their reaction (often times, overexcitement and frustration to not being able to say hello).
We then need to work on building engagement with us and the ability to disengage from their trigger. Changing their emotional response and given them outlets for their emotions that are safe.
Let me know if you need support with a lead reactive dog, I'm here to help.

Let's chat about the mental state of our dogs'
Understanding our dog and the way they are feeling is key for us to make positive behaviour changes and see the progress we want with our training.
Think about yourself and your mood for second, do you feel the same every day? Some days we are more tired, we've maybe had a stressful day at work or trying to sort everyone for a holiday etc. When we are in a stressed, tired or generally overwhelmed state, our responses to situations change. We might snap at people more or not want to engage in conversation.
Our dogs are the exact same, if they've had a busy day or lots of interaction you will see changes in their behaviour. We want to be mindful of this, especially for our reactive and nervous dogs. Had a busy day? Rest up, provide lots of sniffing opportunities to help re-set their brains.
If you've been making lots of progress but have random days of reactions, think about what you did the day before, or how many dogs etc you saw on that walk.

Motivation Monday!
This wonderful boy is a little bit of a worrier. He has a few different things we are working on but one of the biggest issues was that he would not let anyone trim his nails. He would panic, run and would have to go to the vets for them to be cut.
With some slow and steady desensitisation and us humans staying calm and relaxed he has successfully been getting a nail or two at a time trimmed at home! We are still building up slowly before committing to all nails being trimmed at once but this is a huge achievement.
Working with nervous dogs gives me the most satisfaction. Seeing them grow in confidence and learn to relax and not worry is the best feeling 🥰✨

A common misconception about rewards based/positive reinforcement trainers is that we let dogs get away with anything and don't tell them no.
My training doesn't punish behaviour I don't like, but instead guides the dog and teaches them what to do instead. Training is a careful mix of teaching new skills and what to do, letting them problem solve to help the training stick in our dogs' head and managing their environment to stop them practicing doing behaviours we don't want. It is based on us communicating what we want to our dogs clearly, keeping consistent and building understanding of why our dogs behave the way they do.
