Neighbors and tenants of this Sheepshead Bay NYCHA complex have been listening to these poor cats crying FOR DAYS inside this closed daycare facility. No one is allowed access to safely and humanely remove the cats. We have been calling the daycare facility and emailing management repeatedly to express our concerns and offer support. No response. Finally - NYCHA upper management visited the site yesterday and shared their plan to “SMOKE THEM OUT” rather than work with humane trappers and rescuers. Yes, smoke out the cats “because there’s a way to smoke out anything.”

This isn’t an isolated incident—it’s part of a larger, deeply troubling pattern. Across the board at NYCHA locations citywide, we’re seeing the same neglect, the same inaction, and the same inhumane responses to animals in distress. It’s unacceptable.

We are posting this not only to demand that these cats be rescued and real measures be taken to prevent more from getting trapped inside, but also to demand systemic change that prioritizes compassion, accountability and basic decency.

As a city, we can do better.

‼️ CUSTARD UPDATE - HOSPITALIZED AGAIN ‼️

Custard was near death when we rescued him and another cat that had been left in a box outside of an apartment building. After being hospitalized for severe anemia (a result of flea infestation ) he was released, only to go back two days later with infectious pneumonia. He’s on IV antibiotics and is in an oxygen chamber.

WHY I AM FRUSTRATED:
This was preventable—the anemia, the pneumonia, and the ultimate hospitalization. Small, donation-funded rescue groups are constantly left to clean up crises we didn’t create, like an abandoned box of sick cats. And we’re doing it in a landscape where affordable vet care is nearly nonexistent and city support for our work is virtually absent.

WHAT WE NEED RIGHT NOW:
Financial support for this kitten and the 70+ others in our care.

THANK YOU to everyone who has donated and shared and offered support. We feel your support and feel confident Custard will pull through. We feel less confident in our ability to keep going.

UPDATE ON CUSTARD & BANANA — the kitten and young cat who were abandoned in a box.

Custard, the kitten, is currently hospitalized at after receiving a life-saving blood transfusion last night. He was critically anemic due to a severe flea infestation and wouldn’t have survived another day in that condition, according to the veterinarians who are giving him round-the-clock care. (See all the black specks surrounding Custard in first pic ? Dead fleas.)

Banana, the older of the two, is in slightly better shape—though still painfully underweight at just over 5 pounds. He’s in a temporary foster home while we monitor Custard’s recovery and hope the two can be reunited soon.

Both are still very scared, but safe—and getting the care they need.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, and sent support—your kindness is what made this possible. We’re so grateful.

🚨URGENT - RESCUE IN PROGRESS🚨
Cat and kitten abandoned in a box. Both are infested with fleas and the kitten is clinging to life. Our city shelter is over capacity and not accepting new intakes. Every rescue group is overwhelmed as we continue to receive desperate requests for help.

These two are en route to an emergency vet and we hope it’s not too late for the little one.

We will continue posting updates tonight.

Sure it’s kitten season and sure there are a bazillion little furballs out there. But WHAT ABOUT ALL THE SENIORS still waiting for forever homes? 😿

Senior cats are often the easiest, chillest, most grateful companions you’ll ever meet. No climbing your curtains. No midnight zoomies. Just cozy snuggles, deep purrs, and time-earned chill.

For SENIOR SUNDAY check out this lineup of wise and wonderful cats:

❤️Dame Judi: a distinguished tuxedo with timeless elegance and poise
❤️ Tai Chi: a graceful multicolored queen with major zen energy.
❤️ Coach Lou Turfman: low-maintenance, high reward. Cuddly guy with strong suburban dad energy.

If your vibe is less chaos, more cuddles—adopt a senior. They still have so much love to give.

Today was a big milestone for Poppa, the senior cat we rescued nearly two months ago. When we got him, he was in rough shape—struggling with multiple issues, including painful glaucoma in one eye that finally had to be removed to give him relief.

Once he recovers from this surgery, Poppa will undergo much-needed dental work to remove rotting teeth that have caused him ongoing pain and made it hard for him to even groom himself.

Rescuing and caring for senior cats like Poppa is a huge part of what we do. These older cats are often overlooked, but they deserve just as much love, comfort, and dignity—especially after surviving so much on the streets. Papa is proof that it’s never too late for a second chance (and an extreme makeover)!

If you believe senior cats deserve a soft landing too, please consider donating to help cover Poppa’s ongoing care - along with all the other seniors in our care !
