Neighbors and tenants of this Sheepshead Bay NYCHA complex have been listening to these poor cats crying FOR DAYS inside this closed daycare facility. No one is allowed access to safely and humanely remove the cats. We have been calling the daycare facility and emailing management repeatedly to express our concerns and offer support. No response. Finally - NYCHA upper management visited the site yesterday and shared their plan to “SMOKE THEM OUT” rather than work with humane trappers and rescuers. Yes, smoke out the cats “because there’s a way to smoke out anything.”
This isn’t an isolated incident—it’s part of a larger, deeply troubling pattern. Across the board at NYCHA locations citywide, we’re seeing the same neglect, the same inaction, and the same inhumane responses to animals in distress. It’s unacceptable.
We are posting this not only to demand that these cats be rescued and real measures be taken to prevent more from getting trapped inside, but also to demand systemic change that prioritizes compassion, accountability and basic decency.
As a city, we can do better.
