This Holiday Season, We’re Opening Our Hearts (and Our Barn Doors)

Many people don’t realize how many donkeys quietly suffer — abandoned, neglected, misunderstood, or simply forgotten. Here at Hoosier Donkey Rescue and Sanctuary, every donkey who arrives is greeted with compassion, a warm stall, and a promise:

✨ You are safe. You are loved. You will always have a home. ✨

As a small, volunteer-run nonprofit, we rely on our community to help us keep that promise. This year, our herd has grown, our vet bills have grown, and with winter hitting hard early, so have our feed and bedding needs.

If you’re looking for a meaningful holiday gift idea — something that directly helps an animal in need — we’ve created a Holiday Wish List of items that support the donkeys in our care every single day:

🎁 🫏 Holiday Wish List - How You Can Help

Feed & Supplements (Purchased directly for us at local stores):

💛 Buckeye Grow N Win or Low N Steady
Available at Gillespie Feeds in Hamilton, OH - they know our rescue and allow direct purchase for us to pickup.

💛 Salt & Mineral Blocks, Hay Pellets, Senior Feed
Available at Tractor Supply in Batesville, IN - your purchase helps us care for our oldest resident, a sweet 39-year-old donkey who eats warm mashes 4x daily.

💛 Grass hay bales - we pay $7 bale.

Bedding & Supplies:

💛 Bulk Shavings - $20/scoop
Available at Wilhelm Lumber in Brookville, IN - we go through this quickly during winter.

💛 If You’d Like to Donate Financially - As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all donations are tax-deductible.
You can donate via:
📬 Check or Cash donations. Our account is held at First Financial Bank.
📲 Venmo: Hoosier Donkey Rescue

Every dollar goes directly toward feed, bedding, vet care, and daily needs of the donkeys. Truly - even $5 helps.

✨ Coming in 2026: Something We’re SO Excited About ✨

🫏 Sponsor-A-Donkey Program
Choose a donkey to partially or fully sponsor. Sponsors who live nearby will be invited for a special monthly “Sponsor Day” to brush, walk, and spend time with their special long-ear friend. For others, we will provide video updates so you can get to know the lucky one you are helping.

🚶‍♀️ Weekend Farm Tours - Beginning Late Spring 2026
We’ll offer guided walking tours where families can meet our donkeys, learn their stories, and experience the joy of spending time with these gentle, goofy, loving animals.

From the bottom of our hearts - and from every set of long ears in our barn - thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support. You help us give these beautiful animals the peaceful life they deserve. ❤️🫏✨

If you’d like to shop our Holiday Wish List or need help choosing a gift to donate, please send us a message anytime.

Together, we save more long ears.

This afternoon we received a call from an owner of a mini Jenny named Rosie. Rosie lived as an only donkey with a small herd of goats and she had sadly slipped her foal 3 days ago. Obviously grieving, Rosie started acting aggressively toward her smaller goat friends. Rosie's owners decided it would be in her best interest to come here where she will have other donkeys to make friends with. Rosie will be transitioned to a dry lot with a well supervised diet plan to get her in better condition. She'll be seeing the farrier next week as well to get a much needed trim.

Here she is immediately after unloading from the trailer and seeing the other donkeys. Tonight she's in a turnout lot with stall access by herself with the other donkeys just on the other side of the fence. We hope to make introductions tomorrow with one or two if she seems ready. Tonight she seems very content and comfortable and she quickly gobbled up her small bowl of balancer pellets.

It's always an adjustment for these sweet creatures but we know that healing a broken heart is done better with a long-eared friend helping along the way. Welcome Rosie, we are glad you are here.

UPDATE - All dogs are out of the shelter and safe!

CRITICAL!

The Whitewater River water level is dangerously close to flooding our county animal shelter.

They need immediate fosters for a day or two. Please consider how you can help save a life and pray they get enough offers to help. I'm on my way to bring home several to the farm.

Shelter is located in Franklin County Indiana, just west of Brookville.

Here's one of the happy faces that greeted me this morning after a long night of storms. Everyone was eager to get outside to the dry lots. We lost a large section of our long driveway that was washed out in the lower elevation area from the flash flooding and we are thankful that is all the damage we sustained. Thinking of all those who have been severely impacted.

If anyone needs anything, reach out. We are in Franklin County and have plenty of pasture and solid fences if short term care is needed.

Just finished my last barn check of the night ahead of the storms arrival. I always struggle with the decision to put these babies in the barn for storms like this or to leave them in the pastures. We always pray we make the correct choice. For tonight, we pray for our fellow countrymen and equine owners who have already endured the wrath of these storms and for those, like us, who have to face it in the darkness well after bedtime. I sure hope I find these faces as happy in the morning as they are tonight. Here's some pictures of our sweet residents along with their LGD, Bullet, that are all tucked in the barn to ride out the winds, hail and up to 8 inches of rain.

Our sweet boy Ollie was successfully gelded. It's always nice when things go smoothly during and after the procedure. Ollie was a great patient and healed very easily. Now he's set for a great future ahead. Contact us if you might be interested in adopting Ollie. He's an active playful guy.
