Originally published in the 19th century as part of “Traité complet de l’anatomie de l’homme” (1831–1854), this work is the brainchild of Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery and artist Nicolas-Henri Jacob, a student of Jacques-Louis David. Together, they created one of the most iconic anatomical atlases in history—700+ hand-colored lithographs blending medical precision with artistic brilliance.

This illustration is a sagittal section of the human body, revealing the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems.

🦇 Meet the Creator 🦇
Wow — thank you all for being here! I’ve had a wave of new followers recently, and I just wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself.

Hi, I’m Dr. Moe — a heart transplant researcher with a PhD in evolutionary biology, and genetic susceptibility to cardiovascular pathology.
I’m endlessly fascinated by how life works (and unravels), and I’ve always been drawn to the strange beauty of biology, especially where science meets the macabre.

Outside the lab, I’m the founder of Formaldeheidi, (nowadays I have a wonderful human who prepares art by my side) a space born from my love of medical history, anatomical art, and natural historical biology. I’m also a proud advocate for bat conservation and deeply committed to sustainable practices in taxidermy and biological specimen preservation — everything I work with is sourced responsibly, with respect for the life it once held.

At my core, I believe in ars moriendi — “the art of dying” — because death isn’t the end; it’s part of a continuous cycle of renewal, curiosity, and sometimes even beauty. Whether you’re here for the science, the stories, or the oddities, I’m so glad you’ve found your way to this little corner: Let’s get weird — respectfully.
