Fast-footed hunters Cheetahs are the fastest land mammals. And they look more like greyhounds than cats. But this similarity is not surprising, because cheetahs do not hunt from ambush, but pursue the victim at a short distance. They are considered the fastest animals on Earth because they can accelerate to 100 km / h in less than 3 seconds. True, for the ability to run fast, these cats had to sacrifice strength: they have weak jaws, a fragile physique and blunt claws. These shortcomings make cheetahs very vulnerable to other predators, which sometimes take away the prey they have caught from the cheetah. Cheetahs have a calm nature, they are very curious and friendly. That is why it is quite easy to tame them. And for their exceptional beauty and peaceful disposition, cheetahs were used not only for practical purposes, but also kept as pets in the palaces of noble people. In ancient times, hunting with spotted predators was common in the countries of the Mediterranean, the Caucasus and Asia. But it acquired a special scope in the 16th and 17th centuries in India. For example, padishah Akbar I the Great (1556 - 1605) was a passionate hunter with these animals. In cheetahs, he simultaneously kept up to a thousand predators, and throughout his life the padish had about nine thousand cheetahs.

How were cheetahs hunted in ancient times? How were they trained and supported? And why did this royal fun turn cheetahs from hunters into victims? Hunting with these predators has been known in Greece since the second millennium BC. A little later, it appeared in the countries of the East and the Mediterranean, and from there it came to Europe and Russia. But here, due to the difficulty of keeping heat-loving predators, it existed only until the beginning of the 18th century. But in the Caucasus and Kazakhstan, the last hunts with hound cats were carried out back in the nineteenth century. According to some scientists, such royal fun over hundreds of years of existence has led to a reduction in the number of cheetahs in Africa and their extinction in Asia. How could this happen, and for what qualities were these cats valued as hunters?

Cheetahs never attack humans (unlike lions and leopards). They are not dangerous, and even more well-fed.

Cheetahs are diurnal predators. They prey mainly on medium-sized ungulates: gazelles, impalas, wildebeest calves, as well as hares. A cheetah can beat an ostrich. 87% of the cheetah's prey is Thomson's gazelle.
