๐ŸŒŸ Sponsor Spotlight for this event is our wonderful Esther -
McTimoney is a chiropractic technique, developed by John McTimoney predominantly to treat dysfunction in the spinal column and pelvis. Adapted for use on animals in the 1960s, McTimoney treatment alongside massage techniques, such as myofascial release, offers an overall musculoskeletal manual therapy, readily accepted by most horses and dogs. Esther completed her Masters in McTimoney Chiropractic for Animals in 2022 to further aid the horses she worked with, coming from a background in equine welfare and specialising in rehabilitating and retraining rescued horses and ponies using learning theory and following the most recent data on how horses learn and understand their environment. Discomfort or asymmetry in your pet can lead to changes in behaviour and therefore aiding freedom of movement and decreasing the likelihood of soreness will improve your petโ€™s quality of life. Whether itโ€™s your horse who is out competing every week, or your dog who patiently waits in the lorry or at home for your return, all can gain benefit from treatment!

๐Ÿ‡ How do I know my horse needs a treatment? ๐Ÿ‡

Whilst I always advocate for maintenance rather than waiting for a problem to fix - there are some key indicators that your horse may benefit from a treatment...

๐Ÿ˜• A change in behaviour, either in the stable, field or ridden
๐Ÿ’ข Displaying discomfort when grooming
๐Ÿšซ Moving away, or dipping their back when mounting
โŒ Refusing fences
๐Ÿ’จ Bucking or bolting

If any of this resonates, book in and let's see if a treatment could get you back on track!๐Ÿ“ฒ ๐Ÿ“…

What is 'McTimoney' ๐Ÿคทโ”

Chiropractic treatment is a complimentary and alternative therapy method that most have some knowledge of but most may not know that there are varying chiropractic techniques depending on the training received. ๐Ÿซ

My Masters in Animal Manipulation and certificate in Advanced Animal Chiropractic were both through the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. McTimoney was named after its creator John McTimoney, a chiropractor who developed the technique on humans in the 1950โ€™s and later adapted it for use on animals. As these techniques are non-invasive and use adjustments only using the hands, it is readily accepted by animals. Today, the McTimoney MSc in Animal Manipulation is the only validated course of this level in Europe in teaching techniques for adjusting animals. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿถ

So now you know - whilst the title of chiropractor is universally used, the treatment might not always look the same! ๐Ÿ’ก

This week, I saw gorgeous golden oldie Jock for his first treatment ๐Ÿ• Jock has been struggling with the aches and pains of getting older, and so a bit of therapy was in order! As it was his first ever time receiving treatment at age 14, we took everything at Jock's pace, making sure he was comfortable throughout and allowing him to have a little meander between adjustments when needed. Needless to say, he was the perfect gentleman and is hopefully feeling much more comfortable now! ๐Ÿถ

I think Malcolm enjoyed his treatment this week! ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿ˜
Lovely Malcolm was having some performance issues, and so a little assessment and tune-up was required. Luckily, Malc is a very willing patient and absolutely loved being treated, as seen here! Hopefully, after some relaxing massage and a few key adjustments, he'll be back on top form in the next couple of weeks!
Are you having any niggling problems now the perfect riding weather has arrived? Drop me a message to get booked in and see if a treatment can help 07783776931 ๐Ÿ“ฒ ๐Ÿ—“

Allow me to reintroduce myself ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป

Having relocated and finally found a rhythm after the mania of moving house, I want to reintroduce who I am and what I'm about... ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ•

From an entirely un-animal centred family (with a mother who had an active phobia of dogs throughout my childhood!) I somehow sprang an obsession with all creatures great and small. At about age 7, we moved into a home next to a small stables, and from there my poor parents could no longer control how long I spent hanging about trying to spend as much time as possible around my main obsession... ponies! ๐Ÿฆ„

Fast forward a few years, and I've come to the critical decision in a 17 year olds life - what to study at university. While all my A level subjects had geared me towards a business translation degree, I did a quick 180 and decided I wanted to pursue my passion, still riding every week throughout my high school years, I realised I wanted to do an equine degree!

My lack of a science A level was a bit of an issue, but a quick 'gap year' at Bishop Burton College to complete a level 3 equine course solved that problem. After that, I attended all the open days, I decided on the Royal Agricultural University for my degree in Equine Science and Business - those three years flew by and I was lucky enough to complete my work experience at the Blue Cross Horse Unit during my course, learning about the equine welfare industry and picking up invaluable knowledge about learning theory and the training of horses from the very first instance of their interaction with humans, which led to an employed position at the end of my degree. It was through seeing these horses and ponies begin to shine through their interaction with people that I wanted to explore what more we can do to help them and I found the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. After seeing how the treatments could transform animals behaviour and ongoing welfare, I applied immediately to undertake the Graduate Certificate in Animal Therapy which then led onto the Masters in Animal Manipulation. I am keen to continually keep learning and growing, which is why I also took the certificate in Advanced Animal Chiropractic to further expand my toolkit. ๐ŸŽ“โœ๐Ÿป

Alongside the course, I was looking for a new challenge, which came in the form of my job at The Horse Trust, where I was also very lucky to be employed for several years. This allowed me to expand my knowledge of equine welfare, training & retraining of complex behavioural cases, animal welfare legislation and the training of our emergency services about equine behaviour to protect those people and horses involved in incidents around the country. I have been blessed to learn from some of the most knowledgeable people in that sphere throughout my career so far but the time came for me (and my little pooch Brian ๐Ÿถ) to return closer to my family - and so here I am back in Leicestershire. ๐Ÿก

Now I am settled, I'm excited to get back to helping your pets feel on top form - get in touch to find out how we can work together to get the animals in your life living their best life! ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿ“…

So happy to have completed my advanced certificate - this course has given me so many extra techniques to help my clients animals! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿด keep your eyes peeled for some deals coming to celebrate my latest CPD adventure! ๐ŸŽŠ

Congratulations! ๐Ÿฅณ Hats off to Helen Lightfoot, Peggy Sofley, Claire Lawrence and Esther Boalch who have just completed their training to receive our first Advanced Certificate in Animal Chiropractic. It's a fantastic testament to them all that with busy practices they still decided to go back into training so that they could provide even better care to their animal patients. They may be the first, but with others still in training, they won't be the last!

If you are one of our graduates and are interested in enrolling on this advanced certificate, then please contact us to let us know.

Mental health is more important now than ever before but our four-hooved friends are actually scientifically proven to help with that!

Iโ€™m sure those of you who spend much of your time around horses, or any animals as a matter of fact, can attest to the calming and reassuring presence they can bring.

Equine-assisted therapy is now a recognised method of therapy and used for many different groups of people, including adolescents suffering with depression and veterans with PTSD. In both of these groups, the positive affect of horses was measured, seen in an increase in hope, lowering of depression and a reduction of a long list of PTSD symptoms including anxiety, OCD and paranoia.

Along with this, mucking out and exercising your horse is good for improving time-keeping and organisation skills and your physical health, which also increases the release of endorphins, the happy hormone!

So, it could be more important than you think to keep your horse in tip-top condition, a happy horse means an even happier owner ๐Ÿด

Lovely Zara enjoying a stretch before her massage. Zara has been struggling with bending left when being ridden, which correlated with tension in her right-hand side, particularly through her medial gluteal and hamstring muscles. Using fascial release, deep fibre friction and efflurage, Zara saw an immediate improvement in the protraction and retraction of her right hind limb after treatment.
