Did you know that your Half-Seat Polo Position is the key to a powerful and precise polo swing?

This classic position gives you a strong hitting platform from which you are able to create all your shots. It also allows you to remain balanced on your horse whilst hitting the ball and give your horse freedom of movement to react following the ex*****on of your shot.

💡 Tip: Practice transitioning from a full seat to the half-seat polo position, and hold it for a count of three as you are cantering around the arena or polo ground, then back down into the saddle. Try to make these transitions smoothly in a relaxed, controlled environment. This will then become instrinctive when your playing out in a practice or match situation. It’s a game-changer for every shot.

Back in Sheridan, Wyoming 🇺🇸

Delighted to be back in Sheridan and coaching while I’m here.

The grounds are looking fantastic, and we’re very lucky to have access to a great selection of horses from Orrin Connell for the sessions.

I’ll be working with players on all aspects of their game, including:
• Polo riding and getting the best from your horse
• Hitting technique and consistency
• Team tactics, set plays and game theory
• Building confidence and improving decision making in play

Both group and private coaching sessions available.

All sessions are also videoed using Oakley Meta AI glasses, giving you the opportunity to review your coaching afterwards, revisit key points and see your progress from a different perspective.

If would like to book a session while I’m here, I’d love to work with you.

Offside Forehand - one of the most common mistakes is trying to force it with the power in the arm.

You don’t want to muscle the ball or think about hitting the ball “”with the hand””, instead of the stick head. Focus on twisting the body and take the arm back as a single motion, so the left shoulder points in the direction you want to hit the ball, stay relaxed to allow the weight of the stick head to come through the shot, and then the swing will flow naturally.

By focusing on cordinating the movement of the body and the arm in one motion, the stick can come through smoothly and consistently, giving you a cleaner, more controlled swing.

It’s not about effort, it’s about timing, rhythm and allowing the movement to happen.

Nearside forehand. This shot is all about body position and alignment. One of the most tricky shots to hit with accuracy and distance.

To execute it effectively, you need to stay fully rotated through your body, with your weight down through your right knee to balance the upper body, allowing yourself to remain twisted around on top of the horse throughout the swing. The line of the shoulders dictate the line of the ball and the balance and rotation of the body creates the space and position needed for a clean, controlled swing.

The direction of the shot comes from driving the knuckles or back of the hand down the line you want the ball to go as the knuckles are parallet to the stick head, and the ball moves away from the stick head at rightangles in every shot.

At the same time, your elbow, hand and stick head should all stay on the same plane, parallel to the pony - this is key for both accuracy and consistency. Finally rotate the swing from the shoulder, and not around the elbow so power can be generated by taking the hand up, back, around and through the shot.

When these elements come together, the shot becomes far more repeatable and effective in play with greater distance and direction.

Struggling to convert long penalties consistently? When it comes to 60-yard penalties, success almost always comes back to a few key issues:

Distance - Swing technique and timing is critical. Get into the half-seat polo position. Turn so your left shoulder points towards the goal and ensure you keep your eyes on the bottom of the ball. Aim to hit the ball when it’s opposite your pony’s right front leg to get your body weight, and the weight of the horse through the shot. Keep your head down - don’t lift it up too soon otherwise you’ll lift off the ball.

Direction - Your follow-through matters. Push your fingernails down the line you want the ball to go, extending the swing forwards straight through the centre of the goal. With your pony on the right leading leg, aim for a long, calm, straight approach, lining yourself with the centre of the goal.

Practice - Regular, focused repetition builds confidence. Take time to practise penalties deliberately, a good 15 minutes at a time over consecutive sessions until the movement becomes consistent and reliable. Then regular practice maintains your rhythm and timing.

At Grace Polo Coaching, we focus on simplifying these fundamentals so they translate under pressure, not just in practice.
