The key to the Nearside Forehand isn’t just the swing, it starts with your body position in the saddle.

To execute it effectively, you need to rotate your hips and shoulders, allowing yourself to fully twist on the horse. This creates the space and alignment needed for a clean hit of the ball.

From there, the direction of your shot is guided by the plane along which you’re swinging your stick. Focus on getting the line of your shoulders and your stick head pointing in the direction you want the ball to go. If that alignment is off, accuracy will always be compromised.

It’s a combination of rotation, balance and control that makes this shot consistent and effective in play.

Understanding the line of the ball

The line of the ball is one of the most important rules in polo, and one of the most misunderstood.

It dictates who has the right of way and ultimately keeps the game safe. Understanding it early allows you to make better decisions in attack and defence, to position yourself correctly with respect to your opposition players, and hit the ball with confidence in every play.

Get this right, and everything in the game starts to make more sense.

Polo riding requires a different position in the saddle, and your lower leg is a big part of that.

In this video, Victoria explains why the lower leg in polo sits slightly further forward than in traditional English riding, and how that directly impacts your signals to the horse and your balance and effectiveness in the saddle.

This more forward leg position is critical to helping you keep your lower leg off the horse and from squeezing from underneath, which a polo pony would interpret as a request to accelerate away. It also helps you stay more secure when riding at speed, allowing you to move with the horse while keeping your upper body free, balanced and ready to come into the half-seat polo position to hit the ball.

Without it, you’re more likely to give confusing signals to the horse and and struggle to get into a strong position to hit every shot.

It’s a subtle adjustment, but one that makes a real difference to how your horse responds to your signals and how you ride and play.

If you’re looking to feel more secure, more balanced, and more effective in the saddle, this is something we work on in every session.

Want to hit the ball more accurately?

Start by focusing on riding correctly to the ball, checking the distance between your horse and the ball.

You should be about 2 feet away from the ball. Too close or too far, and you have to adjust your swing — which is where mistakes creep in.

As the best players are approaching the ball, they are focusing 100% on watching the ball, as their setup is correct in the first instance.

One of the key principles of a consistent polo swing is keeping your mallet on a single plane.

This means allowing the mallet to travel in a smooth, controlled arc from start to finish. For each swing, the stickhead should be in continuous motion, building up speed until it connects with the ball at the bottom of the swing, under the drop of the shoulder, and where the stick and arm fall in a straight line.

For the start of the offside forehand, the elbow, hand and stick head should be on the plane. Having moved into the half-seat polo position, there should be one smooth action of rotating the body, so the left shoulder points in the direction you want to hit the ball whilst at the same time you move the hand back on the plane. There is a slight pause of the hand at the back of the swing before you move the hand down to hit the ball and continue into the follow-through. There should be no abrupt movements, no stopping the hand at the back of the swing, no chopping down at the ball and no changing the plane mid-swing. When the mallet stays on the plane, your swing becomes more balanced, more accurate, and far more repeatable.

Good body position, body rotation and a relaxed grip, all help the mallet move naturally through that same line every time.

At Grace Polo Coaching, we spend time refining these fundamentals so players develop a swing that is not only powerful, but technically correct and reliable under pressure.

Because in polo, consistency comes from correct technique.

Every session can be filmed for detailed analysis in your own time.

What you feel in the saddle doesn’t always reflect what’s actually happening. By capturing each session on video, you are able to review in your own time, your polo riding, your swing, timing and positioning with complete clarity and from every angle.

You can slow things down, remind yourself of key coaching aspects, and re-examine exactly where improvements can be made, whether that’s with your polo riding, your swing technique, or the timing of your shots out on the ground.

This allows for more precise, targeted recollection and gives you a clear understanding of what to focus on between sessions, helping you progress more efficiently and with greater consistency.

Because real improvement comes from seeing, understanding, and then applying.
