Auntie Jessie is at the BVNA congress to learn the latest advances in vet nursing and brush up on skills. This is my first time ever attending congress as a delegate. Registered Veterinary Nurses undertake 15 hours of CPD (continued professional development) each year to stay on the register. This register is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons..but did you know anyone can be hired by a vet practice, put on a pair of scrubs and call themselves a vet nurse?! Sadly the title is not protected, which means someone with minimal to zero training could be entrusted to monitor your pet's anaesthetic for surgical procedures etc (that's a scary thought?!). Thankfully, more Veterinary practices are now only employing Registered Veterinary Nurses but it's a shame that this is not yet a legal requirement. Today was a great day and it was lovely to see companies using their platform to support local charities

Who remembers Bess the Irish Terrier puppy from earlier this year?! Bess was very poorly when her owners asked for help after losing the rest of the litter. Despite having an attentive mother and visiting the vets they were losing the battle to save the puppies. After much deliberation me and her owners decided I would take Bess to handrear. After discovering Bess had a nasty infection, I worked with the vets to get her the antibodies she needed along with lots supportive treatment to pull her through. Thankfully Bess made it and was reunited with her mother once weaned. I received this lovely photo of Bess recently and cannot believe she's all grown up (and so beautiful ❤️) ❤️

APPEAL to help a litter of kittens! Do any of my veterinary colleagues have type A or AB feline plasma to help save a litter of kittens from neonatal isoethrolysis please? Kittens are not born yet so we have a better chance of preventing them from having this awful condition which is usually assumed to be "fading kitten syndrome". Their mumma is a rarer blood type which will cause her colostrum to attack the kittens blood cells if they do not have the same blood type as her. Managing this condition will be a challenge. We will have to test each kitten as soon as they are born, if they are a different blood type they will be handreared for 24 hours. After this, they can no longer absorb the colostrum via the bloodstream and are safe to be reunited. That's the plan! The problem is these kittens will not receive adequate immunity if we can't find them matching plasma, so that is where hopefully the power of social media will give these kittens the best start. Thanks everyone 🐱

I see Angelica (who is 22 years old!) every other month to clip her claws. Without these visits, her claws would most certainly grow into her paw pads which would be painful. Arthritis and thickened claws means she struggles to shed them. Younger cats do this by climbing and scratching their claws...usually on their owner's favourite furniture!. A good reminder to check your cat's claws once a month if they are over the age of 8.

Angelica would much rather stay in the safety of her home to have her claws clipped and I am honoured to provide this service to such a deserving lady 🥰

Treats are a great way to distract pets when having their microchips implanted. Sometimes this works a little too well and I nearly end up with an addition to my visit box 😆

Last weekend I was fortunate to be able to stay with babaaay Chloe as her owners needed a pet sitter. Chloe is a cleft palate puppy I reared a couple of years ago. She is my longest foster so far. The first 6 months of her life were spent with me and she was very hard to let go of ❤️ But I'm glad I did because she has the life of riley; a wonderful family who I'm lucky to call friends ☺️ funny how animals can bring people into eachother's lives..I don't think I'd know many people at all without them!

Visited my favourite blind cat yesterday. 5 years ago, Weasel was going to be euthanized after being found on a country lane, weighing just 180g with severely infected eyes (he looked like a zombie kitten!) Thankfully the vet I was working with approved my request to remove his eyes and let me take him home instead. Weasel has the best owners I could have ever wished for. He has an endless supply of toys, company from another cat, house rabbits and a cat proof garden where he enjoys catching flies 😆 🪰

https://youtu.be/X6NmOYhiqy0 Just a snippet of the saga that was Suzi's handrearing experience. She was a constant worry, each hour things seemed to change and it took us a while to stabilise her and get her to where she is today...a happy, healthy kitten. I balled my eyes out watching this when I finished, it's been an emotional one!

Next month, I will be running a few discounted microchip clinics. These clinics are limited so please get in touch to claim your discount. It is now a legal requirement for both dogs and cats to be microchipped. If you ever lose your dog or cat, a microchip means if scanned, they can be traced back to you within a matter of minutes. I have nursed many animals that were presented as strays requiring medical attention, yet they were actually owned but lacked a chip or had an unregistered chip. This creates a sad scenario, as veterinarians can only administer first aid due to the necessity of obtaining owner consent for procedures. With this in mind, I always include free registration, which I handle for you to ensure your chip is registered, along with free change of details for life should your details change.
