Fall is almost here! 🍂
That means it’s time to start prepping for winter—stocking up on hay, checking blankets, and making sure everything is ready for our animals during the colder months.

One thing that often gets overlooked? Dental care.

Horses’ teeth are continuously erupting throughout their lives. In the wild, chewing sticks, bark, and tougher forage helps keep teeth worn down naturally. But since our domesticated horses don’t have that same diet, they often need a little help.

Most horses benefit from a dental exam every 1–2 years (sometimes more often if there are irregularities). Floating helps reduce sharp points and correct any bigger issues so your horse can chew comfortably and get the most nutrition out of their hay and/or grain. Routine dentals can start as early as 3 years old but its never too late to help them out. Our older horses can get a lot of out of a dental to help their overall health and weight.

A quick check-up now can make a big difference! 🐴✨

Health certificates!

Once the certificate is written, it is good for 30 days. The 30 day health certificate can list more than one horse. It is good for one state/destination listed.

If you travel a lot:
Some states accept the 6 month health certificate, those certificates have to be completed by the owner(s) each time they travel. They will need the name, address, and phone number of each location for when they travel and they will have to file specific information on the horse listed each time they travel. The horse will have to be inspected by a vet to create the health certificate originally and then the owner will fill out information for each state they travel to.

The 6 month certificates are good for one horse each. These are not our rules but the guidelines given to us to follow.

Please give us a call if you're traveling, moving, showing, selling, or going camping with your equine! If you have specific questions or need more information, please feel free to reach out.

Foxtail vs Timothy

Timothy grass is a cool-season grass commonly found in pastures and is often used as hay for horses. In contrast, foxtail is a summer annual grass that can be potentially harmful to horses when it produces seed heads. The seed heads of these two grasses look very similar, but one key difference is that foxtail has sticky, hair-like awns that can become lodged in a horse's gums and mouth, leading to ulcerations.

In the image, the three foxtail seed heads have yellow awns coming from the seed head, but the timothy does not. Foxtail can be found growing in pastures or in hay bales. Check out this article to learn more about other methods of identification and how to control growth in pastures: https://extension.psu.edu/how-to-tell-foxtail-from-timothy-and-control-it

Our Friday last week was full of lacerations! While scary for all involved, try to keep calm and give us a call. Sending a photo for reference always helps us understand the gravity of the situation. It is important for us to know if the bleeding is controllable or not, uncontrollable bleeding is emergent and controllable bleeding is urgent. Knowing the difference will help us know what timeline is available for us to head your way!

Hey everyone, I wanted to stop in and share some news with you. For the last two years Dr. Dylan Long has been a big part of our practice here in Lenoir. Many of you have had the chance to get to know him through your working relationship with our practice and have helped him grow as a new graduate veterinarian.

Dr. Dylan and his family, with many prayers and discussion, have decided that it is in their family's best interest to continue their life journey closer to family in South Carolina. I want to wish both Dylan, his wife Mary and their entire family the best of luck, well wishes and prayers as they embark on this next stage of life and career. And I want to thank Dylan for his service over these past two years for Ascent Vet Health and its clients.

Thank you,
Dr. Brett McCaskill

We recently posted about heat stress but heat can really cause a lot of different issues that we need to watch out for.

In addition to heat stress, make sure that your horses are drinking water. Consider adding an electrolyte supplement to their feed to help keep them drinking. We recommend doing this year round but if they aren't typically getting it, at least add it in a few days before big weather changes. Dehydration can lead to colic, and no one wants that, so please keep an eye on your friends drinking habits and make sure that they're staying hydrated and have some good shade coverage during this heatwave.

Heat Stress 😩

Summer is here and that means we gotta pay attention to the temperatures of our friends. While summer tends to be when most riding occurs, it also presents its own challenges for our companions.

Horses can experience heat stress and its no fun. Look out for high respiratory rates/flared nostrils when not being worked or not returning to normal after working and sweating more than normal for what appears to be no reason. Take your horses temperature- above 102 is considered a fever. Try to count their respiration rate, 10 to 20 breaths per minute is normal.

If you think your horse is experiencing heat stress, get them to a cool place out of the sun and give us a call at 828.222.6900 so we can help guide you to what to do to help them.
