THE EXERCISES IN THE IMAGES
SET UP
Place the poles on each quarter line (between the center line and the track). Distance between the poles: about 20 m (66 ft).
Here are three different exercises you can use the same poles for:
A
Ride along the track in any gait. At the corner letter, ride a leg-yield toward the first pole. Straighten the horse and ride straight forward along the pole. After the pole, ride another leg-yield toward the next pole. Straighten the horse and ride along the pole. Finish with a third leg-yield out to the corner letter.
This exercise is a good way to break the leg-yield into smaller parts so the horse maintains forward energy.
B
Ride a square over the poles so that each side is 20 m (66 ft). Ride straight lines with corner turns. One approach will be short (5 m / 16 ft from the fence) and the other longer (15 m / 49 ft), but with a short distance after the pole (5 m / 16 ft from the fence).
This exercise gives you good practice in maintaining a calm tempo and planning your line over the poles.
C
Ride a serpentine with three loops across the arena. If you come from the left rein, you will have a longer approach to each pole or obstacle with a short distance afterward. If you come from the right rein, the approaches will be shorter.
After practicing exercises B and C a few times, you can, if you wish, reposition the poles to train under the same conditions in both directions.
