Tariffs - the not fun, not sexy topic that’s top of mind for every Canadian business owner this morning 👩‍💻

Here is a TLDR on what you need to know:

𝐔𝐒 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬: Trump has extended an existing exemption (section 321 de minimis) that allows purchases under $800 USD to cross the border duty-free. For now, US customers who place orders under $800 USD will not pay additional tariffs.

It is expected that this exemption will be removed once there is a sufficient process in place for US agencies to collect these tariffs, but there is no date in place yet.

𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬: business as usual - no duties on shipments within Canada. Provincial and federal taxes apply.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬: duties may be due upon receipt of your order. Please check the tax policy of your country before ordering.

Today is Small Business Saturday, so we would like to take a moment to thank you guys - our wonderful community of customers, followers, and friends!

Jake and I started Strange Tails in 2021 out of the spare bedroom of our apartment. He was armed with ten years of experience doing leatherwork as a hobby with a keen eye for design, and I had picked up some social media skills from running ’s account along with professional experience in customer service and project management.

At the time we had no idea what it would grow into, but we knew that we loved Finley, and we were determined to make him some better gear than we could find available. We envisioned a system of products that all worked together to optimize for functionality, with beautiful designs and colours, all the while offering the high quality and attention to detail of a handmade product. Since then, we’ve gone viral with our multi functional leashes, longlines, and handsfree adapter system and received positive feedback from dog owners all around the world.

Running a business that not only sells products, but also manufactures them in-house has been an incredible challenge. We’ll never be able to compete with next day shipping from Amazon, but over the past three years we’ve invested in our workshop and honed in our skills to learn how to manufacture hundreds of products every week. At the outset, we weren’t sure if our model would be successful - would customers really want to pay a higher price for our handmade products? Would they be understanding of our processing time and willing to wait when they could have a leash delivered to them tomorrow instead? As we started to grow, we asked ourselves - was investing in new tools and machinery for the shop the right choice? Would taking the leap to rent a commercial unit in an expensive city like Vancouver pay off?
