I know you know that moment when your dog has something in their mouth and then you try everything you got to get them to drop it without being suspicious because the moment they catch on that you want it…they will either swallow it or take off?

Well, this behavior builder is to avoid those moments.

First you, play.
Then, you pause.

Next you repeat, add in the word “drop” and a marker and payment system.

And always end with a come down.

Dog training may not be what you need.

Traditional training tends to focus on “fixing” behaviors.

But when your dog is barking, lunging, freezing, or shutting down… it’s not just a behavior problem.

It’s a nervous system one.

Your dog’s ability to learn, listen, and adapt is directly tied to how regulated they feel moment to moment.

Here’s what changed everything for me as a trainer:

✨ You can help them.

With the right support, you can bring your dog down from a high arousal or frozen state—not by demanding obedience, but by understanding their body’s signals and slowing things down enough to build a set of rehearsed decompression skills.

I’m not saying dog training doesn’t matter.

But the nervous system? That’s the foundation.

Six months ago, I was really burnt out.

And so, a decade into this work, I decided to change things up in my business (not the first time, won’t be the last).

I’m lucky enough to live reasonably close to my friend and fellow trainer Erin Down to Earth Doglady.

I’m even luckier that when I asked if she could use any help at her Farm Camp for dogs…she said yes!

The last six months have completely reignited my passion for working with dogs. Working for and with Erin has brought balance to my life and business that I didn’t know I was missing.

We’ve had frigid days where we never saw a single blade of grass under layers of snow and ice. We’ve had complete downpours, and absolutely boiling hot days where we have to start hours early just to survive the heat.

Believe it or not we even had one or two nice days in there (not many, but a few!)

And so this is both a love letter to Farm Camp and all the dogs I get to spend my days with and also a thank you letter to one incredible friend/boss.

Here’s to another amazing six months 💚

It's time for another Camper Spotlight! And next up is...DEREK!

Nicknames: Derek Potato Ceasar Salad, Dereky, Derek baby, baby Derek, Widdle Guy, Baby

Describe him in three words: goofy, loving, inquisitive

How old is he and when is his birthday?
Derek is one, his birthday is March 19th

What is his favorite time of day?
Derek loves the morning, wakes up with a go get ‘em attitude

What’s their favorite place to go other than farm camp?
Derek enjoys just going on walks around the neighborhood since he isn’t the biggest fan of car rides. He also really loves sneaking upstairs and downstairs (he is not allowed in either because in his eyes, socks and toys are edible)

What would be his drink of choice?
Derek really wants a Long Island iced tea but is too young to be at the bar so he orders a bud light to appear of age.
