Today is THE day!!
Along with New Year's Eve, this is the biggest day/night/weekend/holiday that pets/livestock are lost. NOW is the time to make sure all microchips and ID's have the correct information. NOW is the time to take up-to-date pictures of your pets/livestock for identification - clear pictures of faces, markings, distinguishing factors, help all involved.
If you can, make space for a lost pet who may need your help and safety through the noise until they are helped back home.
Please make sure your pets, your friends pets, your parents pets, the neighbors pets (even if you don't like the people) are ready; livestock and their enclosures should be secure - triple check it, then check it again. Every one that can be should be tagged, chipped, or branded. For livestock: take blue tape folded across the harness to make a tag with your contact info and their name (this helps calm them, usually). .
Remember to ALWAYS keep identification on your pets/livestock, regardless if they are "safely put away."
Ensure all microchip information is up-to-date, and regardless if it is or is not, keep the pet secure beyond normal measures. Do not tether your pet outside for any given amount of time, even if you are with them. If your pet has anxiety with loud noises do not walk them, let them mess in the house - a bottle of enzyme cleaner is less than the alternative. Provide a safe, dark, and quiet location for all those you can.
For future reference: The app Life360 also provides live locations for pets, because they are family, too. I am not affiliated with them or knowledgeable about their pet services beyond what they have advertised (similar to an air tag). I am happy we are seeing more options for our four legged friends.
There are local pet lost/found groups if something happens, but I hope we do not need them. Please let me know if you need a reference for help with lost pets/livestock, heaven forbid. I will do what I can to help.
Have a safe and happy holiday weekend
