Today's PSAS is the beautiful tree/shrub
Confederate Rose Hibiscus mutabilis also known as Confederate Rose Mallow, Cotton Rose, and Confederate Vine. Growing up with this tree/shrub I always thought that it was a US Southeastern native only to discover today that it is from China! 😱 My Grandma had one in her yard & I always loved it, it was one of her favorites. This late summer to fall blooming tree/shrub has rich green leaves with either a single or double flower that starts out white then fades to Pink, then hot Pink as the day goes on. In southern zones 9-10 they will grow 12-15 ft tall & 6-8 ft wide. In Northern zones they don't get as big & will die back with a hard freeze, but come back in the springtime. They grow in full sun to part shade, average well drained soil, and will become drought tolerant once established. This tree/ shrub can also be propagated from fresh cuttings & from the seeds collected from the seed pods in the springtime.

Today's PSAS is this great Florida Native
Starry rosinweed Silphium asteriscus
This Wildflower occurs naturally in Sandy pinelands, Flatwoods, and Disturbed areas, and attracts a variety of butterflies, native bees, and other pollinators. It is noted that birds also will eat it seeds! It prefers a dry to moist well drained soils & full sun, accepting partial shade and will grow 2 to 5 ft tall. It is a perennial and is found in North and Central Florida with most of its distribution found along the West Coast. It will die back in the winter, and will reseed on its own. You can also collect the dead seed heads to plant the next year.
Also noted is that the common name is rosinweed and not refers to the gummy substance that's found in the stems. Native Americans chewed on these stems to clean their teeth and it has a long history of medicinal uses in both North America and Europe!

😆 it's time to make the donuts! And for those who may Wonder? Winnie's diaper is not fastened as she takes off out the door chasing her ball, that's the way we do it until she comes back inside for the day then I fasten it up!

This is a better explanation of my live video from yesterday. It is important to remember when you're making your pollinator Garden that it can attract all pollinators including bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and wasps. Specific plants and flowers will attract either bees and wasps or butterflies and hummingbirds, with each of them pollinating differently. So especially if you have someone who may be allergic to bee stings you would want to be conscious of that!

Well friends I've had a very busy weekend and I did not prepare a PSAS for today! I pulled a lot of weeds this week, took an invasive pest class over at the UF/IFAS Lake County Extension Office and worked 2 days with the horses this week. Now to start all over again! Have a good night sweet dreams 😴
