YOU HAVE TO PAY TO TRY THE HORSE NOW?

Dearest Readers,

A horse-sale question is making the rounds:

Is it reasonable to charge potential buyers a fee to try a horse that is for sale?

Some sellers say yes. Their time has value, too many people show up only wanting a free ride, and every trial places additional wear and risk on the horse. A fee may help separate serious buyers from tire-kickers - especially if it is applied to the purchase price.

Others say absolutely not. Trying the horse is part of the buying process, and asking someone to pay just to determine whether the horse is suitable feels like another expense being pushed onto the buyer.

So, Bettys, let’s hear it:

Would you pay a fee to try a horse?

Sellers, do you charge one?

How much, and is it credited toward the purchase?

And does your answer change depending on whether the horse is worth $5,000 or $100,000?
