We are on baby watch! Waffles was down when I got home from work and her udder has tripled in size from yesterday and she has passed her mucus plug…. Fingers crossed for a safe delivery and healthy babies 🤞🏼

Love my Dairy goats from Shady Oak Farm and the friendship that has came with them! 🩷

Did you know that back in 1988, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the second Sunday through the third Sunday of June as National Dairy Goat Awareness Week?

His goal? To recognize the growing role of dairy goats in providing nutritious milk, especially for small farms and families across the country. Over three decades later, that still rings true—especially here at Shady Oak Farm.

We’ve found that dairy goats are a perfect fit for our small farm, and it’s not just because they’re adorable (though that helps). Here’s why we love them:

🥛 They produce just the right amount of milk for our family and soap-making projects—enough to be useful without being overwhelming.
🌱 They’re easy on our land and love to browse weeds, brambles, and brush—earning their keep as natural land managers.
💡 They’re smart, social, and full of personality—every goat here has their own quirks and charm.
👧 They’re an incredible fit for youth, 4-H’ers, and anyone new to livestock. Goats are approachable, not intimidating, and offer the perfect way to build confidence and experience in animal care.
🧼 And yes—their milk makes the most luxurious goat milk soap we’ve ever used!

Dairy goats aren’t just part of our farm—they’re part of our story.
So even though Dairy Goat Awareness Week is officially over, we celebrate these animals and their impact all year long.

Yesterday Athena got to meet the goats inside the pen and get a good look at everyone. She or the goats weren’t sure what to think, but she did a great job being calm and curious! 🩷

These two handsome young bucklings are looking for a new barn to call their own!

The first bucking is a red buckskin out of Cabochon Farms Ice X Shady Oak Farms Tula. I’m in love with this little buckling and have thought about keeping him back for myself as a breeding buck. He was one of Tulas Triplets. DOB 4-26-25

The second buckling is a dashing young black and white boy that was a single baby. He is a BIG boy and so very strong and confident! Out of Cabochon Farms Ice X Shady Oak Farms Bambi. DOB 4-30-25

Welcome home Athena 🩷

Athena is Thors new guardian friend from Crane Creek Karakachans. She is from the same breeder and out of the same dam as Thor! The only difference is Athena is a Pure Karakchan, not mixed with a Maremma like Thor.

Introduction’s went great and Thor is loving his new friend!

This is exactly why i encourage not only show breeders but meat breeders as well to breed towards the standard! 👏🏼

"I'm not showing rabbits. They're just for meat." Body matters!!

All rabbits are manually posed with back toes in line with the knee/hip & front toes to the eyes.

The goal is DEPTH equal to WIDTH. Why? Depth & width equate to meat. Below are the before and after photos of processed meat rabbits. Commerical breeds such as Rex, Satin, Californian, New Zealand etc are meat rabbits. Confirmation matters.
