DDK9 Community! Please be on the lookout! If you know these dregs of society please help them do the right thing and go to the shelter before the cops are tracking them down!
UPDATE- The person that left the cat has come forward and the owner has also been located!
If this is you, we must insist that you return to the shelter during business hours to complete a surrender form for the cat you tossed out while we were closed. Thankfully we were able to retrieve her after she hunkered down under a parked car. If we hadn’t gotten her, I’m sure the coyotes would have tonight.
See, there are only 4 of us and we can’t be at the shelter every minute but we do have a phone, a page and an email. There is really no reason to dump an animal unless you just woke up and decided to be a crummy human today.
KRS 525.130 prohibits abandonment of an animal without provisions for care. Provisions for care would mean bringing it to the shelter during hours and handing it over to a staff member. Failure to do this is a Class A Misdemeanor. We are giving you the opportunity to correct the issue before we persue further action.
Before commenting that we should have a drop box for animals after hours, please don’t. If we had $60,000 to install a proper locking drop box that alerts staff or is climate controlled and prevents cats/dogs being put together so they don’t attack each other or die from heat stroke or freeze to death, we would hire more staff to be open 24 hours. Please don’t make excuses for people’s poor choices. We are an open intake facility and don’t turn animals away, you just have to show up when we are there.
