Lost Dog After the Fireworks? Don’t Panic—Here’s What to Do

If your pup bolted during the July 4th celebrations, take action right away. These steps can help bring them home:

✅ Start by searching your yard and neighborhood. Look under cars, in garages, sheds, and any quiet hiding spots. Call your dog’s name and use words they know—like “Treat!” or “Wanna go for a ride?”
✅ Leave out food, water, and a crate or bed near your home. Many dogs return when things quiet down.
✅ If your dog has a canine buddy at home, bring them along on your search. Familiar scents and sounds can help draw your dog out.
✅ Make a yard sign with a photo of your dog and your phone number—place it where people walking or driving by can easily see it. Post Lost Dog signs on community boards.
✅ Lay out worn clothing or used bed sheets in a wagon wheel pattern around your home. Your house is the hub, and the scent trails act like spokes to guide your dog back.
✅ Contact Marion County Dog Services at 503-566-6988 or visit mcdogs.net to file a lost dog report. You can also see which dogs are currently at the shelter. Please note: this number will not be monitored or answered on July 4th, but you can leave a message and our team will get back to you on July 5th when we are back in the office.
✅ Post your lost dog info and photo on social media. Try , and don’t forget neighborhood apps like NextDoor or Ring’s Neighbors app.

Don’t wait! If your dog is taken to Marion County Dog Services, he will be placed on a 3-5-day stray hold. If he is not claimed during that time, he can be placed up for adoption or transferred to a rescue agency. Begin your search immediately!

Be patient and persistent. Many dogs are found after a day or more—don’t give up!

Your veterinarians are already booked beyond capacity. ER wait times are still 16-48 hours (or not taking any patients at all!). It is so important to keep your pets safe now more than ever.

Another heat wave is forecast for Oregon this week so we want to remind pet owners about some safety issues to keep in mind.

Heatstroke: Many cases of heatstroke happen when dogs are locked in cars with windows rolled up or cracked slightly. Heatstroke is life-threatening for animals. To avoid heatstroke, it's best to leave your pet at home in a cool, shady spot. Symptoms of heatstroke include:
* Panting
* Dehydration
* Excessive drooling
* Increased body temperature (above 103° F)
* Reddened gums and moist tissues of the body
* Production of only small amounts of urine or no urine
* Rapid heart rate

Bloat: At any time, but especially when the temperatures are high, provide your pet with plenty of clean, cool drinking water. This is very important in order to avoid dehydration. However, do not let your dog drink a lot of water before, during or after exercise because a condition called gastric torsion, or bloat, may result. A dog, especially a deep-chested breed like the German Shepherd, can die from bloat. Its stomach may swell and even rotate like a wringing towel, which cuts off blood supply through the stomach.

Burnt Paws: You wouldn't walk barefoot on hot asphalt and neither should your pet. Your dog can get damaged or blistered feet from hot asphalt. Consider walking or running on the roadside or grass, as well as early in the morning, or later in the evening, especially during this heat wave.

Toxic Algae: If you are thinking of going into the water to cool off, be on the lookout for waters that look suspicious—foamy, scummy, thick like paint, pea-green, blue-green or brownish red, or bright green cells suspended in the water column. Warnings are currently issued for the Willamette River (Sauvie Island to Ross Island), Eagle Ridge Park on Upper Klamath Lake, and Malheur Reservoir, but most bodies of water in Oregon are not monitored for algae. When in doubt, stay out! Exposure to toxic blue-green algae can be fatal. Symptoms include:
* Weakness or collapse
* Nausea, vomiting
* Excessive drooling
* Abdominal pain
* Diarrhea
* Difficulty breathing
* Shaking, trembling
* Tremors, rigidity, paralysis

Recycling cans and bottles is an easy way to help the shelter's dogs. Stop by the shelter during our open hours and ask for blue bottle drop bags. When they are filled take them to the nearest location and the shelter will receive the deposit funds. Thank you to our volunteers and the public who have been collecting and contributing for the past 2 years!

TRIGGER WARNING-UNPLEASANT GRAPHIC POST
Great work and hats off to
!! I’m grateful the brave witnesses came forward stating true facts on the nightmare. Not only did you save Titan’s life and spared others from fear + abuse, you exposed Daniel’s evil twisted secrets. 🙏🏼

This scumbag will stay behind bars for quite some time. Amen to that! After being detained in June 2019, he has not walked free. That speaks volumes!!

Neither Rex nor Titan deserved the unimaginable acts of cruel evil torture!🥺💔 Rex endured an immense amount of trauma + suffering + internal injuries. He was then strangled by a collar & leash which led to his passing.😢😫
The filthy punk buried helpless Rex in his parents backyard!🤢🤬

As of late fall 2019, Titan has been living a wonderful life out of state with incredible humans! The truth did prevail and these boys won’t ever be forgotten! I will post public court records once I have copies and I will update inmate status once the POS is transferred. He doesn’t deserve to be in an environment were a lot of females reside nor should he ever be near the playground @ CCCF!

The abuse mentioned above happens more than you want to believe. Similar pukes are sitting in Dallas, OR @ Polk County Jail and other local institutions. It’s mind boggling! I’m asking you to please always try and speak up on behalf of voiceless victims or any victim for that matter. Thanks for following and supporting the victims. Soar high Rex! Although I don’t know you, I sure do care about you!
