November is National Senior Pet Month ❤️

As a proud cat mom to a senior myself, this month holds a special place in my heart. Many of the pets I care for are senior cats, so it always catches me by surprise when I meet a new client with a pet under the age of 10.

Senior pets require a different kind of care — one that’s patient, gentle, and mindful of their changing needs. As our pets age, health conditions like arthritis, kidney disease, or diabetes can begin to surface. Supporting them through these changes while keeping them happy, comfortable, and loved for as long as possible is always my goal.

I truly believe that good quality care is the best care—especially in their golden years. As much as we wish they could stay with us forever, what matters most is giving them the best life possible every single day.

I loved my daily visits with Tilly while her mom was away. Here’s what she shared about her experience:

“I had the pleasure of working with Kat when I was recently on vacation. She cared for my cat, Tilly, for 3 days and she was reliable, attentive, and very caring toward her.
Kat demonstrated professionalism and a caring attitude from the beginning. During the initial meet and greet, Kat took the time to learn about Tilly’s habits, dietary needs, and quirks. Tilly is wary of strangers but went to Kat right away. Kat consistently sent me updates and photos, and her website is wonderful for pictures and communication. ✍️If you are using the services of a professional pet-sitting or dog-walking business, your pet-care provider will complete a pet profile sheet for your pet(s) to ensure they have a complete picture of your pet’s behavior and health.

This ensures they can provide top-notch care but also helps keep your pet—and the pet sitter—safe.

📍So it’s important to be honest. If your pet has any physical conditions or issues, has ever bitten or scratched anyone, or has had difficulties with past pet-care providers, share this information with your pet sitter. Withholding information can put both your pet and the pet sitter at risk.

We know you want the best care for your pet—and that can only happen if you are honest about your pet’s health and behavior and transparent about any concerns.

Did you know the pet sitting industry is currently unregulated? That means anyone can call themselves a pet sitter — but not everyone meets the same professional standards.

That’s why I’m proud to be part of Pet Sitters International (PSI), the leading educational organization for professional pet sitters and dog walkers. PSI recently released their Global Standards for Professional Pet Sitters and Dog Walkers — a huge step forward in defining what quality, reliable pet care should look like.

While these standards aren’t law (yet!), they’re helping raise the bar across the industry — and I’m proud to already follow the majority of these best practices while continuing to learn and grow as a Certified Professional Pet Sitter (CPPS) and PSI member.

My commitment is to provide the very best for both pets and their people. 🐾

🎃 Halloween is almost here!
While it’s a fun night for humans, it can be a little spooky or stressful for our pets. Here are a few ways to help them enjoy the evening safely and calmly:

🐾 Some dogs feel more comfortable staying home while you’re out trick-or-treating — and that’s totally okay!
If you’re handing out candy, consider setting your pup up in a quiet room with a licky mat or special chew to help them relax.

💊 If your pet takes anxiety medication, now’s a good time to check in with your vet about refills before the big night.

🍫 Keep all candy (especially chocolate and gum) safely tucked away in a closed cupboard or container. Even a small amount can be toxic to pets — and those candy wrappers can be choking hazards, too.

👻 Costumes and yard decorations can be confusing or scary to pets. Try getting dressed up out of sight or spend a few days before Halloween doing short desensitization sessions with treats and positive praise.

A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your pets happy, safe, and stress-free this Halloween!

Developed from PSI’s Recommended Quality Standards for Excellence originally established for PSI members by PSI Founder and CEO Patti J. Moran and her team, the updated framework establishes baseline best practices for pet-care businesses worldwide. Moran and her team have more than 120 years of combined industry experience.

PSI’s Global Standards were reviewed by leaders in the pet care, insurance, and pet health and safety fields, along with a pet owner panel, ensuring they reflect both professional expertise and consumer expectations.

“Since its inception PSI has asked member businesses to commit to standards for excellence in pet sitting and provided them with the resources to meet those standards,” explained PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston. “Because the pet-sitting industry is rapidly growing but still largely unregulated, we knew it was more important than ever to share our association’s professional industry standards framework with pet-care professionals and pet owners.”

🍁 Fall Pet Safety Tips 🍁

Fall brings cooler temps, colorful leaves, and… a few hidden dangers for our pets. Here are some quick tips to help keep your furry friend safe and happy this season:

✔️ Limit distractions – When out walking your dog, they need your full attention to stay safe. Keep your phone tucked away and leave the earbuds at home so you can stay alert to your surroundings.

🦌 Be Cautious During Deer Season
Fall is white-tailed deer mating season (known as “rut”). Deer—especially bucks—are more active and unpredictable this time of year. If you see one while walking your dog, calmly change direction and give them plenty of space. Remember: where there’s one, there’s usually another nearby.

🐶 Layer Up for Cooler Weather
As temperatures start to drop, consider pulling out your pup’s favorite fall jacket or sweater to keep them comfortable during walks.

💩 Pick Up After Your Pet
Fallen leaves can easily cover waste, leaving unpleasant surprises for others—and can also spread unwanted bacteria and parasites. A quick cleanup goes a long way in keeping everyone healthy.

🍄 Watch for Mushrooms
Mushrooms tend to pop up in the fall (and sometimes in spring and summer too). Some are toxic to pets and can hide under fallen leaves. Keep an eye out in your yard and along trails—remove them when possible or simply steer clear to prevent accidental snacking.

🐾 Do a Nose-to-Tail Check
After outdoor time, run your hands gently over your dog’s body. Check for any new lumps, bumps, debris, ticks, or signs of discomfort. Whether you’re out on the trail or in your own backyard, it’s a good habit to catch anything early.

🌟 October is National Pet Wellness Month! 🌟

When we think about wellness, it’s not just about food (though there are so many options out there!). I’m not a nutritionist, so I’ll leave that to the experts—but I do know from experience that pets, just like us, thrive when their physical and emotional needs are met.

For me, wellness often starts with something simple and joyful: a walk. 🚶‍♀️🐾
Neighborhood walks aren’t just exercise—they’re enrichment! Every sniff, sound, and sight gives your dog (or even your adventurous cat!) a chance to explore, process the world around them, and keep their brain happy and healthy.

That’s one of the things I love most about what I do. A weekday walk with me isn’t just movement—it’s an adventure for the nose and the mind. 🐶✨
