After an unexpected outcome, I found myself with 6 more joeys. Now I have the teenies, the middle kids, and the big kids.

The Teenies: Orphaned after losing their mother to a dog attack. Weighing just 15-17 grams at intake, these are the smallest joeys I’ve had in care. With such tiny structures and fragile skin/tissues, they require a delicate, skilled hand to tube feed around the clock. Their condition is stable but guarded.

The Middle Kids: Orphaned after losing their mother and 6 siblings to a severe infection. Averaging 50 grams, these joeys are furred with open eyes, but still require tube feeding and incubation. Due to the infection they were exposed to in the pouch, they are on a 10 day course of antibiotics. One baby has some hind leg trauma and may not recover. All are in stable but guarded condition.

The Big Kids: Fell off and were separated from their mother when she was chased by a dog. Now weighing about 70 grams each, these babies are learning how to lap formula out of a dish and will soon be transferred to a big cage where they can practice their climbing skills and use their prehensile tails. While they could still be in an incubator, I needed to move them in order to accommodate the smaller joeys in care. These babies still receive supplemental heat via a heating pad and super warmers.

As a volunteer rehabber, all expenses are out-of-pocket and I rely on donations to offset some of this cost. Without the generosity of others, I couldn’t make this happen.

I have created an Amazon Baby registry with current needs for all three passels. If you are able to purchase or donate towards their care, it would be tremendously helpful and I will be eternally grateful.

Yesterday, a mama opossum came in after being attacked by a dog. She and her 3 joeys had been outside for 6 hours following the attack, and they all arrived cold, wet, and covered in dirt. While I had hoped mama could pull through and raise her babies, her injuries were too severe and the most merciful action to take was humane euthanasia. This was a difficult and heartbreaking decision, as I really wanted her to live and her babies to have their mama. I promised her that I would give her babies the very best care. They are just barely viable, but I have successfully tube fed them and do believe they have a good chance of survival. There are many nights of broken sleep to come, and the road ahead is long, but I am hopeful. 🤞💚

Creature Feature: Eastern Painted Turtle male 🐢

On World Turtle Day, FAW welcomed this eastern painted turtle into foster care.
This guy was illegally taken from the wild and kept as a pet for a few years. He was surrendered to my mentor yesterday, and then came home with me. This was previously discussed and planned, and it just happened to occur on World Turtle Day.

Gatsby, as I’ve decided to call him, will be in foster care for at least a year while funds are raised to have him disease tested before he can be reintroduced to the wild.

Welcome to FAW, Gatsby!

Earlier this week, I triaged these two infant groundhogs before transporting them to another rehabber. My current schedule wouldn’t allow for me to rehab them myself, although I wanted to. Unfortunately, one didn’t make it but the other is doing well.

A joey’s instinct to hold onto their mother is so strong, they even climb up and hold onto the rim of the pouch instead of sleeping/relaxing comfortably inside.
One of these babies is a comedian. Can you guess which one?

This opossum arrived last night, lethargic, after being found curled up and alone in a yard. She should still be with her mom, so it’s good that her finder called around for a rehabber. She did take some fluids with assistance, but remains in critical condition.
