When I picked up my first rat that would become my pet I knew: I was hooked. The little hands, the big eyes, the twitchy nose, all dragged me into the crazy world of owning a mischief (group of rats). I was content for a long time to stay with the boys I had, but then I got a few more, and then I started thinking about breeding. After hours and hours of research the passion grew, and I knew I wanted to begin breeding for the love of rats and all their cute, crazy antics. I knew it was unlikely I would make a profit, and I knew that it would be work, but I also knew it was something I really wanted to do.
My promise to you, the adopter, is that rats leaving my home are pets first, and that I will not adopt out a rat I have doubts about. Everyone is bred from loving parents and temperament tested before leaving. They will be integrated into my mischief to make sure they get along with animals outside of their family and will be happy, healthy, pets. All I ask is that you give them a loving home for their all too short lives, and that if something were to happen making you unable to care for them, please send them back my way.
My adult rats are housed in Double Critter Nations with lots of enrichment (hammocks, hides, ladders, etc) and free roam time to boot. They get daily love as adults, and babies get time alone to let their true temperament shine through. Too much handling while young can make less-than-great rats tolerate it, while if a rat that hasn’t been handled much seeks out attention naturally you know that’s an A+ pet! Babies are left with their mom until five weeks, then introduced to same-sex groups until eight weeks old to continue to learn “how to rat” from others. Rats will not be adopted out until AT LEAST eight weeks old. If I want to monitor a new line for temperament, I may hold until they are older or even breed again and wait for those pups to age up before adopting. Pups ready to be adopted are in the photo album labeled “Available Pups”. Sometimes I will retire a rat from breeding or just need to make some room and as such adults up for adoption are under the “Available Adults” album. I will post updates on all my rats from time to time, but they might not all be ready to be rehomed as pets.
Adoption: I am picky with who will be allowed to adopt from me. I want my rats to go to responsible owners that know what they are getting into. As such, you MUST fill out the adoption form on the main page and be accepted before you will be allowed to reserve rats. Rats can be reserved at eight weeks, when I know who I’ll be keeping and who I know will make great pets elsewhere. After reserving your rats I’ll send you an Adoption Contract which must be read over carefully and signed before you’ll be allowed to adopt.
