A hidden threat in the water could be putting dogs at risk — especially water-loving breeds like Labradors.

𝘏𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘻𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢, or liver flukes, are dangerous parasites that can infect dogs when they swim or wade in contaminated water. Yet even in known hotspots, it often goes undiagnosed.

Labrador Retrievers—especially those who work, train, or play in freshwater—are more frequently diagnosed, and Dr. Kathleen Aicher of Texas A&M University is leading a study to uncover just how widespread the risk really is.

Her findings could help improve awareness, diagnosis, and prevention for all water-loving dogs.
