Sometimes a rescue serves its greatest purpose as a soft landing for horses at the end of their life. This is the case for one of our most recent intakes.

Ghradine was an owner relinquishment due to relocation out of state. She spent her younger life competing in dressage, and was a registered Hanovarian mare. Her owner loved her deeply and knew a rescue was the best placement for her senior horse. She was aged at mid-twenties, and had recently deteriorated physically, unable to gain weight. She appeared to have a past injury to her elbow, desperately needed a farrier, deworming, and her teeth floated.

She was kept in a large private turn-out area to protect her from needing defense during feeding, space for mobility, and very regular attention. She received a much-needed trim, began a power-pak process, and a vet visit which revealed dehydration and determined she had poor enough body condition that sedation was not yet safe to complete a float. The vet decided to give her 30 days to put on more weight before returning to float her teeth.

Sadly, 10 days later, she passed away, naturally, with two caring individuals by her side. In the few weeks she was with us, she got loved on multiple times per day, got custom feed and care, regulated socialization with kind horse friends and sheep, and it was obvious she knew she was safe and loved.

This is the devotion we show to all of the horses who come to us. She was lovingly buried on our property as her final resting place. Dance on, you beautiful dressage damsel. You will be missed!
