Progress with dogs isn’t linear. Some days feel easy, some feel messy.

Try to notice the small wins, like a faster recovery, a check-in that didn’t happen before, one calmer moment, one better choice. Those little things are often the real signs that learning is happening. 🐾

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the incredible women who lead with love. 💗

Your kindness, guidance, patience, and care make a lasting difference to the people and animals you love, and to the world around you.

Whether you’re raising children, mentoring others, caring for rescue animals, loving your 4-legged babies, or simply showing up with compassion every day… your impact matters more than you know. 🐾💕

Thank you for the everyday moments that change lives. 🌸

Understanding aggression means understanding build-up. Aggression isn’t random. It isn’t “out of nowhere.” And it usually isn’t about a single moment.

Imagine aggression like an explosion. Two elements are required:
🛢️ The fuel tank
🔥 The match

The fuel tank is everything that builds over time:
• Chronic pain
• Sleep disruption
• Environmental stress
• Medical changes
• Hormonal shifts
• Hunger or thirst
• Loud noises (thunder, fireworks, construction, etc)
• Changes in routine
• Lack of exercise/enrichment
• Owner’s emotional state

The match is the immediate trigger:
• A stranger entering the home
• A hand reaching toward food
• A dog approaching too quickly
• A collar grab

The match matters.

But without fuel, there is seldom an explosion.

If we only focus on the moment of the outburst, we stay reactive. If we reduce the fuel and manage the matches, we prevent the explosion. And if we help the dog feel safe, we make explosions less likely to happen, even when a match is lit.

This framework is one of the foundations we teach inside the Aggression in Dogs Master Course because prevention starts long before the bite.

It’s 2:30 AM and I’m laying in bed wide awake after the adrenaline rush of a tornado warning… and all I can think about is how important emergency preparedness is for us and our dogs.

Getting my own dogs safely into the basement by myself tonight really put things into perspective.

We spend so much time working on training and behavior, but in moments like this, what matters most is:
• Can you get your dog to a safe space quickly?
• Will they follow you to a basement or interior room without hesitation?
• Can they settle when everything feels chaotic?

For so many dogs, especially those terrified of thunderstorms, these situations are overwhelming. The wind, the pressure changes, the sirens, and urgency from us….it’s a lot.

A few things I keep thinking about tonight:

• Practice moving to your safe space BEFORE you need it
• Keep high-value treats easily accessible
• Have a leash/harness ready to go
• Use something like a radio or steady noise to help drown out the storm sounds
• Work on calm, safe confinement and settling skills
* Have something ready for them to do and in place, like a long lasting chew, something to lick, or a favorite toy

Emergency prep isn’t just about supplies, it’s about your dog’s emotional ability to cope, and your ability to guide them through it.

If your dog struggles with storms, know I’m thinking about you tonight. These moments are hard. And they’re exactly why the work you’re doing matters so much.

Give your dogs an extra snuggle tonight 🤍

I’d love to hear what do you do to prepare your dogs for severe weather or emergencies? Anything you’ve found especially helpful?
