💜 SEPTEMBER IS SU***DE PREVENTION & AWARENESS MONTH 💜

This month hits differently for me.

Almost 33 years ago, when I was only 12 years old, I lost my aunt to su***de.

She absolutely loved horses. They were a huge part of her life and her heart, and that love for them has stayed with me all these years.

Today, as someone running an animal rescue, I understand just how emotionally exhausting this work can become. Behind the rescue posts, happy endings, and freedom rides are people carrying heartbreak, financial stress, impossible decisions, animals they couldn't save, constant pleas for help, and the feeling that no matter how much you do, there is always another animal waiting.

Compassion fatigue, burnout, depression, and su***de are very real concerns within animal welfare and rescue—and we need to talk about them.

And I want to say something that isn't easy for me to admit publicly:

Don't think for one second that I have never thought about doing the same thing my aunt did.

I have.

There have been moments when everything felt unbearably heavy. Moments when I wondered how much more I could carry.

But I'm still here.

And somewhere along the way, the horses became more than something I loved.

They became part of my purpose.

Heart of the Wild Equine Rescue carries a piece of my aunt's memory, and I know she would want us to keep fighting for the horses who need someone in their corner.

So, for Su***de Prevention & Awareness Month, I want to honor her in a way I know would mean something to her:

According to Wyatt, there’s really no competition. 😂🐴

Apparently somebody was feeling extra handsome, extra spicy, and VERY impressed with himself today. Just look at him showing off like he pays the feed bill around here. 🤣

Wyatt said, “You’ve got the camera out? Say less.” 💨😎

Life at the rescue is never boring when you have this much personality running around! ❤️

🐻🚨 WELL… APPARENTLY WE HAVE A NEW PET. 😂

Our security cameras caught a little—or maybe not-so-little—surprise strolling down our driveway overnight…

A BLACK BEAR! 🐻👀

And apparently it felt perfectly comfortable just casually wandering through like, “Yep, this looks like a nice place. Think I’ll check it out.” 😂

The wild part is that in the 2 years we’ve been here, we have NEVER seen a bear on the property—not even bear tracks. Then last night, this one decided to make its security-camera debut!

So naturally, our newest “pet” needs a name. 🤣

Legacy is a gorgeous bay BLM mustang mare, foaled in 2024 and captured from Buffalo Hills, Nevada on 11/19/24. She stands approximately 14hh and is halter-broke, leads, stands tied, loads/unloads, is good with her feet, and loves attention.

❤️ Legacy has a forever home waiting with one of our repeat adopters!

Even better, her adopter is covering her transport, quarantine, and expenses after she leaves the lot.

Beth will be going with Legacy to the same repeat adopter, where she will have a safe place and a future waiting for her. ❤️

Right now, 30+ mustangs and burros are sitting in various kill pen lots, waiting for someone to notice them. Some need adopters. Some need rescue placement. Some need a safe home offer. Others simply need people willing to donate toward their bail, quarantine, or transportation.

🐴 We created one list to make it easier to SEE THEM, SHARE THEM, and HELP THEM.

With the border reopening, the urgency surrounding horses in the slaughter pipeline is very real. We don't want to look back and wish we had shared one more time, tagged one more person, or tried one more avenue to get one of them safe.

THE MUSTANGS & BURROS NEED US — BUT THEY NEED US TOGETHER. 💔🐴

Right now, there are so many Mustangs and burros sitting in different “kill pen” lots across this country (well over 30 total).

Some have deadlines.
Some have no placement.
Some have no rescue coming for them.

And the heartbreaking reality?

For many of them, no help is coming.

Unless something changes.

We can point fingers at failed adopters. We can blame the system. We can be angry with the BLM. We can talk endlessly about how these animals ended up in the slaughter pipeline.

But at some point, we also have to look at ourselves — the rescue and advocacy community.

Because these Mustangs and burros do not care which rescue has the biggest following.

They don't care who has more donors.

They don't care who said what about whom three years ago.

They don't care about Facebook drama, rumors, egos, grudges, jealousy, or who gets the credit for saving them.

They just want to live.

And while adults are fighting with one another, tearing each other down, spreading rumors, slandering other rescues, and refusing to work together because of personal differences…

the horses are still sitting in those pens.

The trailers are still moving.

And some of those Mustangs and burros are going to make a trip they will never come back from.

That should matter more than any disagreement between any of us.

If we truly care about saving Mustangs and burros, then rescues — BIG and SMALL — need to start working together.

Put the egos away.

Put the hatred away.

Stop the slandering.

Stop hoping another rescue fails because you don't like the person running it.

Stop making animals pay the price for human disagreements.

We are all adults, and these animals deserve better from us.

Maybe one rescue can fundraise.

Maybe another has quarantine space.

Maybe another has an open trailer spot.

Maybe someone has a sanctuary connection.

Maybe a small rescue can take one horse while a larger organization can take five.

Maybe one person can't do much alone — but together, we can move mountains.

Because I am only one person.

We are only one rescue.

And no matter how badly we want to, we cannot save them all by ourselves.

Neither can any other rescue.

But imagine what could happen if instead of competing, we collaborated.

Imagine a network of rescues, sanctuaries, advocates, haulers, trainers, fosters, adopters, and donors working together when Mustangs and burros enter the slaughter pipeline.

No drama. No egos. No competition.

Just one question:

“What can WE do to get this animal safe?”

Because if we can't put our differences aside long enough to save them, then we have to acknowledge something painful:

We are becoming part of the problem, and our once wild and free-roaming burros and mustangs are being shipped across the border.

It isn't only the adopter who failed them.

It isn't only the system that failed them.

It isn't only the BLM.

We, the people who claim to love and advocate for them, are failing them too if we allow personal differences to stand in the way of saving their lives.

Every rescue has critics. Every rescue has people who don't like them. That is never going to change.

But our mission should be bigger than our differences.

The Mustangs have already lost their freedom once.

Some have been shuffled from home to home, auction to auction, and pen to pen.

They shouldn't lose their lives because the humans who could have helped them couldn't work together.

So this is my plea to the Mustang, burro, and all equine community:

Let's do better.

Let's communicate.

Let's share resources.

Let's help one another fundraise.

Let's share trailers.

Let's find placement together.

Let's stop worrying about who gets the credit.

And when one of these animals lands in the slaughter pipeline, let's fight for them together.

Because at the end of the day, I don't care whose rescue name is attached to the save.

I care that the trailer carrying that Mustang or burro turns toward SAFETY instead of toward the border.

That should be the goal for every single one of us.

They need us now more than ever.

And maybe the greatest thing we can do for them right now is stop fighting each other…

and start fighting FOR THEM. 🐴❤️

United, we can save more. Divided, the Mustangs, burros, and all equines are the ones who pay the price.

Both are held, thanks to an angel donor. Now we must hurry and raise the remaining balance of 1️⃣7️⃣4️⃣0️⃣ ASAP.

ROSIE & BETH ARE BOTH SITTING IN McLEAN, TEXAS — AND BETH IS INJURED AND NEEDS VETTING ASAP.

We are fundraising for TWO BLM MUSTANG MARES with a deadline of TUESDAY, AUGUST 25 AT 5 PM. These girls need people to step up, share, donate, and help us find a way forward for BOTH of them.

🐴🌹 ROSIE — LOT #1334

Rosie is a beautiful 2019 Strawberry Roan BLM Mustang mare from the Triple B area near Ely, Nevada. She was captured on August 21, 2020, 2 weeks after our sweet Nevada, and stands approximately 14hh.

Rosie is halter-broke, and there is also concern that she could possibly be pregnant because she appears to have developed a bag, or she just had a foal weaned from her. This is NOT confirmed, but it makes getting her somewhere safe even more important.

Rosie deserves the chance to get out of that lot and into a safe situation where she can be properly evaluated and cared for.

Beth is a 2015 Grey BLM Mustang mare captured from Cedar Mountain, Utah in 2017. She stands approximately 15hh and is halter-broke.

But Beth's situation has become even more urgent.

💔 Beth was injured.

She needs to be seen by a veterinarian ASAP so the extent of her injury can be determined and she can receive whatever treatment she needs.

That week could mean EVERYTHING for them. It gives us more time to raise funds, ensure their safety, and secure placement.

Tuesday is Farrier Day here at Heart of the Wild Equine Rescue, and we could use a little help covering the cost of hoof care for the horses in our care. ❤️

Farrier care isn't optional—it is an essential part of keeping our horses comfortable, healthy, and sound.
