Lilies and cats are a dangerous combination, and the risk is bigger than many people realize.

As spring flowers arrive in homes and bouquets, it is important to know that true lilies (Lilium species) and daylilies (Hemerocallis species) are extremely toxic to cats. The entire plant can be harmful: petals, leaves, stems, pollen, and even the water in a vase. Even a small exposure can lead to life-threatening kidney failure in less than three days.

What to watch for
Early signs can start within minutes up to 12 hours and may include drooling, vomiting, decreased activity level, and loss of appetite. Signs of kidney damage can begin 12 to 24 hours after exposure, and kidney failure can occur within 24 to 72 hours.

What to do
If you suspect your cat has chewed a lily, licked pollen while grooming, or drank vase water, call your veterinarian or a pet poison control center immediately. Prompt treatment matters, and early care can greatly improve the chance of survival. If you can, bring the plant to the clinic or take a clear photo to help identify it.

Prevention is the best protection
If you live with cats, the safest plan is to enjoy lilies at the greenhouse and not at home.
