Old Wethersfield Stray & Kitten Rescue

Old Wethersfield Stray & Kitten Rescue was formed out of the grassroots efforts of friends & neighbors who were concerned about the feral cat population in Old Wethersfield, CT. We began our rescue efforts during the summer of 2021, when we noticed several kittens playing in an elderly neighbor's back yard. As a result, we quickly recruited the efforts of family & friends and began the process of

trapping 18 kittens along with neutering & releasing several female cats back to their original territories. These efforts were featured in an article by The Hartford Courant, "Old Wethersfield Community Comes Together To Rescue Stray Cats", published November 17th, 2021. Through this process, we were able to recruit several local residents who helped foster & socialize kittens while they waited to be adopted. We also secured the ongoing support from Double A Veterinary Hospital in Wethersfield, CT, where kittens receive initial wellness assessments and medical treatment for any illness common to feral kittens, as well as secured the ongoing support of Pieper Veterinary Hospital, Middletown, CT, who provide emergency vet care for feral/stray cats with serious injuries, Protectors of Animals, East Hartford, CT and Dakin Humane Society, Springfield, MA, who provide spay/neuter services for feral cats, who don't meet our adoption standards. With the proceeds of two successful Facebook fundraisers, we were able to raise enough money to cover most of the cat's daily care and medical expenses. As time went on, we soon realized that our efforts would need to continue and that ongoing management of the feral cat population in Wethersfield would need to be addressed, as our local resources were overwhelmed and underfunded. As word spread of our efforts, residents throughout Wethersfield began to reach out to us for support in managing other feral cat colonies in the town of Wethersfield... how could we say "no"! Armed with a list of local volunteers, a small stash of cat carriers and a few "Havahart Traps", we expanded our support to include the entire town of Wethersfield, CT and over the past two years, our team of volunteers has rescued over 100 kittens and TNR'd dozens of feral cats! So, with your support, Old Wethersfield Stray & Kitten Rescue, now formally registered with the IRS as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, will be able to continue its work and assist local residents with the trapping and neutering of feral cats as well as helping to coordinate the care and adoption of feral kittens. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these animals as well as help reduce the impact feral cat colonies have on our local wildlife.

Update: Owner located.
Do you recognize me?
This sweet orange intact male tabby (approximately 2 years old) was recently found wandering outside someone’s home on Cottwell Drive in Wethersfield. We have posted photos of him on local “What’s happening Wethersfield” pages with no luck of locating his owner.

We’ve also been in contact with local animal control and have been working with Double a vet, to ensure this guy’s wound is properly protected and cared for.

We currently have him inside under the care of our foster Melanie, and hope to locate his rightful owner.

Sadly, he isn’t microchipped so we need the support of our local followers to please spread the word and our post, so we may reunite this sweet boy with his family.

Update: Both adopted 💕

These two precious little kittens made their big entrance into the world just four weeks ago and are being adopted by their rescuers once they are strong and ready!✨

These sweethearts were found in a neighbor’s backyard after their feral momma was unintentionally scared away from her birthing nest. Thankfully, Jacob and his wife stepped in and rescued them right away. 🙏🏼💗 A big reminder to everyone: if you find a cat with newborn kittens, please don’t intervene too quickly. Watch from a distance and reach out to your local rescue for advice. Newborns are incredibly fragile and need their mama whenever possible.

Since their rescue, Teresa their foster momma, has worked around the clock bottle-feeding every 2-4 hours and manually stimulating them to help them grow strong and healthy. Thanks to her love and dedication, these babies are now thriving! 🌈🐾

We’re so thankful this Easter for safe rescues and tiny miracles! 💛

FOSTER FEATURE FRIDAY!

Meet Dorothy, one of our amazing foster mommas! She has been fostering with us since 2020 and has had 16 cats and kittens which includes 2 litters of kittens! Her and her family are animal lovers through and through! Both her and her husband have grown up with cats, so it seemed like the purrfect opportunity especially since they have a 7-year-old son who also loves animals, just like his parents!

As a foster, you gain so many wonderful memories. One story that Dorothy will never forget is about Lucky! “Lucky loved joining my husband's virtual work meetings! He was an important contributor to the team! We also had a lot of fun during our Halloween photo shoot with one of the litters of kittens - Callie, Simba, Boots, Onyx, Chase, China.”

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a foster cat parent?
Dorothy’s advise for any aspiring foster moms or dads is that you need to “understand that it can be a time commitment, but the reward for helping animals is SO worth it! Be patient, especially in the beginning—some cats need time to adjust to a new environment. Create a safe, quiet space where they can feel secure, and give them lots of love and attention on their terms. Every cat is different, and watching their personality shine through as they gain confidence is incredibly rewarding. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or lean on your rescue organization for support—they're there to help you succeed. And remember, you’re making a huge difference in that cat’s life!

When Dorthy isn’t taking care of her family and our foster kitties, she loves to be outdoors which includes hiking, downhill skiing, searching for sea glass at the beach! She also loves all of the sports, especially the UConn Huskies and the NY Mets! She is also am a Swiftie, while her husband Dave and son Elliot are indie rock fans!

Without animal lovers like Dorothy and her family, we would simply not thrive here at OW Kitten Rescue – please take a moment to thank Dorothy and her wonderful family for all they do to help the rescue! We appreciate you, Dorothy!

Update: Adopted!💕
This gorgeous momma-to-be is as sweet as Spring! April is incredibly friendly and affectionate it's pretty obvious to us that she was once someone’s pet. She’s not microchipped, but has found safety and love with her loving foster momma Jill while she prepares to welcome her kittens into the world. 🐾

April has a silky soft, thick coat and LOVES to be brushed, it’s her favorite pampering time! 🥰 She might be a little timid at first, but once she warms up, she absolutely adores attention and will happily soak up all the love you have to give. ❤️

She’ll be available for adoption after her pregnancy and once her kittens are weaned (about 8 weeks post-birth). This darling deserves a forever home full of love and cuddles. Stay tuned for updates on her and her kittens! 🐱

If you are interested in adopting sweetheart April when she's done weaning her babies, please fill out an adoption application pinned to the top of our page!

It’s been a hectic few weeks at the rescue! Molly and her babies are doing great following her emergency c-section. Kittens are getting fat and Molly’s incision is healing nicely. A huge “thank you” to their foster momma Kathy for overseeing their care.

We are also awaiting the birth of more kittens! Both Peaches & Cassie are also expecting and our fosters Kathy (soon to be Jill) & Lucinda are nervously awaiting the arrival of more kittens.

Our orange momma is expecting five kittens and Cassie… well that’s going to be a surprise. We’ll keep everyone updated as we move through the week ahead!

Molly and her babies are doing great, thanks to everyone who supported our fundraiser and the amazing folks who directly oversaw her care during her hour of need.

Thanks to the quick thinking of her foster mom Sue and our board of directors, the difficult decision was made to have surgery performed at Pieper Memorial in Middletown.

As we’ve learned from every medical emergency we’ve face as a rescue, medical treatments are tremendously expensive and the decision to move forward or allow a helpless animal to suffer is beyond difficult.

Recognizing we are a “pro-animal” rescue, we will always choose the side that best supports the animal and will “figure the rest out later”… This might not be the most fiscally responsible, but we have faith in our community and the support of our truly amazing followers.

So on behalf of Molly, an abandoned momma cat that was left in a carrier on a woman’s porch on Jordan Lane in Wethersfield,

Thank you 💛✨

Molly needs your help!
She went into labor earlier today and successfully delivered two of her three kittens between 8-9am this morning. Sadly her labor stalled and the third kitten has not been delivered. Thanks to the diligence of her foster mom Sue, an action plan was put place and with the support of the veterinary staff at Pieper Memorial, Molly will undergo surgery tonight in hopes of saving her and her unbornrn kitten.

As with all veterinary care, the cost of performing the surgery is tremendous. We were quoted between $4,000 - $6000. Thankfully we do have some money in our coffers but not enough to fund this significant expense.

So it is with hat in hand that we ask for your support. As we all know, rescue isn’t easy nor are the decisions we need to make in support of our rescue cats. But with your help, we can do what’s right for Molly and her baby.

Surprise!! Our momma cat “Lucy” had a baby girl “Ethel” on February 25th and she couldn’t be any more cute!✨

As is our policy, we wait until new born kittens reach their 4 week milestone to ensure they are healthy and ready to meet the new world that awaits them.

Since her birth, Lucy & Ethel have formed a sweet bond and have enjoyed the quiet comforts of their foster mom, Rosa and her daughter Audrey’s bedroom.

This cutie has a wellness exam scheduled at Double A vet in April 22nd and will be available for immediate adoption following her exam.

If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application found at the top of our page. (Please note, we currently have a waitlist for kittens, so adoption requests are handled on a “first come first served” basis.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and foster, Janet Quednau.

Janet first became involved with as an adoptive mom, who was looking for an all black cat, as she knew they were the last ones to get adopted.

After several calls and texts, Janet decided on a sweet kitten and named her Raven. Shortly afterwards, Janet reached back out and offered to help foster. We were thrill, as we knew she had a history of fostering and was patient & kind… and always interested in fostering the most challenging cats & kittens. She quickly became our “go-to” for cats who needed extra time and socialization. She was amazing! Just last year, Janet fostered 17 cats and despite her failing health, fostered 2 more kittens this past January.

Janet was a true giver, not only did she give of herself to our rescue cats, she oversaw the care of her ailing mother and often spoke of her own kids and chatted about them as all moms do.

She will be greatly missed, and will forever hold a special place in the hearts of our rescue family.

In honor of Janet’s life, her family will be hosting a “Celebration of Life” this coming Saturday, March 29th from 12pm - 3pm at First Church of Christ, Wethersfield, CT.

So please join us in celebrating Janet and her amazing contributions to those in need.

With love,

Your foster kittens Pearl, Shale, Midnight, Sky, Boots, Grace, Mittens, Socks, Spirit, Shadow, Loki, Hope, Lulu, Feliks, Wednesday, Morticia, Pugsley, and Misty.

Update: Adopted!!🧡✨
Our sweet “Fergie” is looking for her forever home… could it be yours?

Rescued from a colony in Newington, along with several other cats, Fergie is approximately 3 years old (spayed & fully vetted) but fearful of people. Thanks to her amazing foster, Melanie, Fergie is slowly learning to trust people and learn what it’s like to be loved.

As we’ve leaned over the past few years of rescue, orange female tabbies are rare! Approximately 20% of orange tabby cats are female! We also know that cats who’ve spent most of their lives outside with limited human contact can be fearful of humans and naturally seek out hiding places until they feel comfortable with their surroundings. These cats are often referred to as “Spirit Cats” and do best in quiet homes without dogs or young children.

As a result, we would envision Fergie’s ideal home to be with an adult who is patient and kind. Someone who could give Fergie the time and space she needs to grow confident in her new safe space. Having another cat in the home would be ideal, as having a buddy would be good to help encourage Fergie to be brave and for companionship.

If you are a kind, compassionate and loving person who can provide Fergie a quiet space to discover at her own pace, please complete an adoption application found at the top of the comments for this post.

Together we can make a difference in the lives of our community cats.

Lily & Peter enjoy spending time with “Sedge” before formally adopting. If you see a cat posted that you’re interested in meeting, please don’t hesitate to request a “meet n greet”. It’s a great way to get to know a cat before making a decision to adopt. It also gives us an opportunity to observe the cat-human connection to ensure a good “family fit”.

FOSTER FEATURE FRIDAY!

Meet Jill, one of our loving foster mommas! She’s been fostering for about 2.5 years and is up to 45 cats and kittens! She has always had a love for animals and said that she was more of a “dog person” before her son was born. But after he arrived and became more mobile, Jill noticed that fostering cats and kittens might be the easier option since she already had 3 dogs and ever since she made that decision, she can’t stop! She loves caring for animals and said that it is extremely rewarding to help find them homes and get updates from the families!

Jill has some fond memories of fostering - she says that the one that she will never forget was when “I was helping a family that had 5 adults and 3 kittens they wanted to surrender. I first took in the three babies with their mom, then slowly took the rest one by one to get medical care and find new homes for. I picked up the last adult two months later and when she walked out of the carrier, she was a blimp! Ten days later she had 6 healthy babies! It was my first pregnant mom foster and such a crazy but rewarding experience.”

Some advice that Jill would give to anyone considering becoming a foster cat parent is that “patience is key because some of these animals are so scared or broken that they need time to trust you and trust that you’re there to help them. Slow progress is usually best and little milestones can be celebrated! Also, have a good bin of cleaning supplies on hand! The mess is temporary, and you will miss them!”. Being a foster is so rewarding to Jill, the best part is when she makes those huge breakthroughs, especially with the feral cats. If you gain their trust, you know you’ve struck gold! She told us that “I love when an animal truly gives in to the process and lets their guard down to accept your affection.”

When this momma has some spare time, which is rare when you have kids AND cats/kittens to take care of, she likes to take care of her “permanent zoo” which includes 3 dogs, 2 cats and a toddler! She is also a stay-at-home mom and enjoys crocheting, making custom items with her Cricut, reading, and networking with other animal advocates.

We are so incredibly thankful to have Jill on our team. She has been a huge help with some of our most difficult cases and for that, we are forever grateful! Without dedicated foster mommas like Jill, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Please take a moment to thank her for her wonderful service to the OW Kitten Rescue!

Found a Stray or Lost Cat? Here’s How You Can Help!

🐱Call Animal Control or your local vet: Look for a collar or tag. If no ID, take the cat to a vet or call Animal Control to check for a microchip.
🐾Contact local Humane Society: they also have microchip readers and are a great resource for lost animals. And may have missing animal reports about the cat you found.
🐱Post & Share: Share photos on local lost & found pet groups, social media, or apps like Nextdoor.
🐾Create Flyers: Post flyers around the area with a clear photo and your contact info.
🐱Don't Release: if you can, keep the cat inside if they’re scared or disoriented until you can reunite them with their owner or find a foster for the stray cat.

Update: Molly is pregnant and expecting 3 kittens in 2-3 weeks, so stay tuned!

Miss “Molly” came to us following an urgent call from our local Animal Control Officer, Jess. Apparently our sweet girl had been “dropped off” in a carrier and left on a local woman’s front porch one night without any indication as to where she came from. No note, no tag, no food or water.

At first, the homeowner, Sharon thought the cat may have been accidentally left by a neighbor, but after reaching out to folks living along Jordan Lane, it became obvious that this was an abandoned pet. Thankfully, Sharon knew to contact Animal Control, who drove over to scan the cat for a microchip. After not finding one, Animal Control contacted us to see if we’d be willing to take in this very sweet, but malnourished female cat and so our story begins…

Upon first examination, it was clear to us that Molly had been neglected. Log hair matted, oily spots on her fur, underweight and weak. We immediately began to follow our intake protocols and weighed this sweetie and provided her with basic medical care, food, water and a warm, safe space to recover.

Thanks to the love and kindness of her foster, Kathy, our sweet Molly is well on her way and enjoying the comforts of indoor life. She’ll be taken to Double A vet for a quick wellness check and then off to POA Spay for additional medical care while she awaits to be adopted.

For now, we are extremely grateful to Kathy as well as all our volunteers who collectively support our mission to improve the lives of neglected and unwanted pets in our community.
