We are getting a lot of questions about what to do with turning horses out and this unfortunate ice.

The method we have seen on farms that works the best is to have someone with a skid steer, bobcat, etc. clear the top layer of ice from the paddock. If there is still the smooth ice layer left on the paddock, horses have been slipping on the top or getting skin abrasions around their heels by punching through.

With the temperature forecasts, even if we get some thawing there will be refreezing again for the foreseeable future.

We have some contacts of people that can clear paddocks for you if you need information. We have also seen several people advertising this service on the local horse network Facebook forums.

Hopefully this information helps get your horses back out as soon and safely as possible.

If your horse does become injured on the ice, we are always here to help in an emergency. Please call 240-532-9362.

EHV-1 Outbreak Guidelines for Horse Owners

In light of recent EHV-1 outbreaks in Texas and Oklahoma, we're recommending the following precautions for horse owners in our practice area:

1. Ensure your horse has received a flu/rhino booster within the last three months. While this vaccination isn't a definitive protection against EHV-1 or its neurological effects, it helps reduce nasopharyngeal shedding, thereby limiting the spread.

2. Limit horse travel on and off your property to essential trips only for the next two weeks. This recommendation may change as we learn more about the outbreak's development.

3. Monitor your horse's temperature twice daily and contact us if it exceeds 101.5°F. Also, call us if you notice nasal discharge, coughing, or signs of incoordination. Be aware that slight nasal discharge after exercise in cold weather is less concerning than discharge at rest.

Using hand sanitizer can effectively kill the virus on your hands, and a 1:10 bleach solution is recommended for disinfecting surfaces. If you have come in contact with exposed or infected horses it is important to change clothes and shower before visiting another farm.

Currently, the case reported in Maryland is unrelated and isolated. However, given the ongoing developments, we will keep you updated with any changes.

We value staying at the forefront of equine medicine! Dr. Caniglia was part of a team that developed a novel surgical procedure to treat horses with upper airways obstructions that reduces complications and avoids general anesthesia. Always fun to collaborate with such a great group of equine surgeons as well!

We interrupt our regular horse posts for this fun Friday surprise. 6 weeks ago we adopted sweet miss Oreo from our local humane society. They had no background information on her so it was a complete surprise to wake up to a new addition to the family this morning. Maybe it’s a sign we should be adding reproductive services to CEP in 2025! Help us name this cute little nugget and if you’re lucky, he/she may even make some farm calls this year!

Figuring out why a horse is lame is both a science and an art, but it doesn't have to be a guess. Joint and nerve blocks help to accurately locate the source of lameness to help get the right diagnosis. Blocking a coffin joint as shown helps to distinguish between the many causes of foot pain. If you don't know where or what your horse's lameness is coming from, we are here to help!
