Redemption fees will vary based on vaccination and license status of your

Dog License Registration forms can be mailed to City Hall with payment or can be processed in person at the Licensing Department at City Hall (59 Court St, Rm 217, Westfield). MGL requires that all dogs over 6 months of age be licensed annually. Dog licensing is done in April. Dog licenses are also a great means of identification and can be traced by Animal Control. Dog license fees are $15.00 for dogs that are spayed or neutered, and $30.00 if they are not. A proof of a current rabies vaccine is needed to license your dog. You can print out a copy of the Dog License Registration form (found in the links section of this Page). Adoptions:
The animal shelter is open to the public by APPOINTMENT ONLY. You must have an approved adoption application to visit with animal shelter guests. You may fill out the online adoption form (found in the links section of this Page) or get an adoption application from the shelter. Completed online applications are sent directly to the adoption counselor. Physical applications can be dropped off at the shelter office or emailed to the adoption counselor at [email protected] After an application has been approved, a meet and greet will be scheduled. Approved applications will be kept for a month. After a month, you will have to reapply for adoption. The Massachusetts Animal Coalition’s “I’m Animal Friendly” license plate
tells your community that you care about animals! By purchasing this
license plate, you will be contributing to a program that supports statewide
spay/neuter efforts for cats, dogs, and rabbits. https://massanimalcoalition.org/programs/license-plate/

An incredibly important PSA about dogs on the run by Missing Dogs Massachusetts 💓

8/4/25 We often talk about not calling or chasing a lost dog. We talk about this till we are blue in the face. We know people always have the best intentions of helping, but when we say do not call or chase, there are good reasons. A lost dog does not have the ability to make smart decisions when they are in flight mode and will make bad decisions when they see things that are perceived as a threat. They will run into oncoming traffic, will jump into water, jump off cliffs, the list is endless. Please, when we say do not chase or pursue, listen to these words.

Our Story

The Westfield Regional Animal Shelter specializes in the care of lost, abandoned and mistreated animals. Our animal guests come from Westfield, Easthampton and Southampton. Stray or abandoned dogs are held for 7 days, per state law. Licensing:2018 Dog Licenses are available at the Westfield Regional Animal Shelter and the Westfield Police Department. Massachusetts General Law (MGL) requires that all dogs over 6 months of age be licensed yearly. Dog licenses are also a great means of identification and can be traced 24 hours a day 7 days a week by either Animal Control or the Police Department. License costs are $15.00 for dog that has been spayed or neutered, or $30.00 if they are not. Please bring proof of current rabies vaccine and proof of neutering or spaying with you when licensing your dog. The shelter accepts payment via check or cash. There is no card machine at the shelter and no change can be made. Per MGL Chapter 140 and the City of Westfield's ordinances, you must show proof of a current rabies vaccine and also a current city dog license to claim your dog if it is being held at the shelter. Adoption Fees: The fee for adoption for dogs is $165.00 Included in the $165 is: spay/neuter, micro-chipping, all current vaccinations and a well visit to the vet. The fee for adoption of cats is $125.00. The cat will be s/n, utd on vaccines, FELV/FIV tested and microchipped. Adoptions do not happen on the day the application is accepted. Our Adoption Coordinator will meet with perspective families and conduct a "meet and greet" with all family members and pets first. If you have lost a pet, please call the animal control office as soon as possible at 564-3129. Stray dogs will be held for 7 days. There is no holding period for cats. Owners will also be responsible to pay a daily boarding fee of $15.00 per day in addition to administration fees.
