Paca Peace Ranch for Youth

Paca Peace Ranch for Youth Paca Peace Ranch works with kids and alpacas, helping ensure that 5th graders enter their teens ready to thrive. See www.pacapeace.org Founded in 2002, Paca Peace Ranch was the first youth mentorship program of its kind in the nation.

Paca Peace Ranch works with local 5th graders to build confidence as well as skills in decision-making and peaceful conflict resolution. What makes Paca Peace unique is how they teach these skills: each kid participating in this year-long program bonds with and trains an alpaca. We have new Managers! Bob Wenger has been caring for our alpacas for the last several years, and now he and Vivian have decided they are ready in 2019 to manage the organization, with a lot of help from other volunteers.

Vivian was a mentor last year and saw firsthand what a positive impact the program has had on children. She has been involved with children and animals her entire life and has often seen how each can bring out the best in the other. She’s very excited to be taking up the lead rope as Program Manager!

Paca Peace Ranch for Youth

What a successful Open House and work day last weekend!! Volunteers helped put in fencing to enlarge the pasture and then cheered to watch the alpacas race to explore it (see image below).

There must have been more than 100 people who came to help, meet alpacas, check out the ranch, and enjoy each other's company.

Thanks to Bob and Holly Wenger for hosting the event at their ranch, and for all their careful daily care of our fleecy friends! We are also grateful to all the other volunteers who set up, built fence, cooked and served lunch, and stayed to make clean-up a snap. You are all the ones who make this amazing program possible!

Alpacas are ideal for working with kids. They are naturally gentle, without sharp teeth or hard hooves. Lacking natural defenses, alpacas can be quite timid and require a calm approach, building trust over time. And alpacas are so cute, soft, and fuzzy that kids really want to get close.

Kids learn to calm themselves and to "think like an alpaca" in order to gain their animal's trust. This process helps them build skills in empathy and relationships that carry over into all aspects of their lives. We have also seen kids grow exponentially in confidence through their successes in this program, as they become better communicators with both animals and people.

Please come and see the Paca Peace alpacas and youth marching in the 4th of July parade! We will have a tent set up at the end of the parade with information about our current programs and those through the rest of the summer! Join us to meet some loving alpacas and their youth trainers and get a taste of this wonderful program! We'll see you there!

We have a new set of kids making friends with their alpacas this summer! The pacas look like gangly aliens this time of year just after shearing, but they will return to their normal, fluffy selves in time for cold weather.

Another great day for Paca Peace. We were truly blessed to have such a beautiful day! (Just look at the sky) β˜€οΈ Mattie with King Bear, Mara with Geo and Amra, and Sophia with Antero did some obstacle course training, orienteering, costume play and bagged some fleece to hand out at the Christmas Parade of Lights. Next time we will be decorating the alpaca trailer for the parade. If anyone has any Christmas decorations you would like to donate for the occasion, we would love to use them. Wreaths, garlands, big candy canes and really just anything we can hang from the truck and trailer. πŸŽ„πŸŽ Thanks!

Today was as close to perfect as it gets. Weather was incredible and the alpacas were strutting their stuff at the Arts Hullaballoo. Some of the kids with their alpacas were in the parade and a few of this years kids (Mattie, Mara, and Kylie) had a meet and greet at the end of town. Check out the pics, not a cloud in the sky today, and very happy kiddos and alpacas!

First session for the second group of Paca Peace kids was awesome! The weather was beautiful and the alpacas chose their trainers. King Bear chose Mattie, Antero chose Sophia, and Amra chose Mara. Next week we will be in the Hullabaloo parade and we will have an alpaca meet and feed area in the park by the bowling alley.
